Klewki was established on an isthmus between Lake Klebarskie and Lake Linowskie. A stream crosses the isthmus and connects the two lakes. This setting gives the village a clear geographical identity; at the same time, buildings from several centuries and two routes with different itineraries take centre stage. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore helpful to start by asking whether you would like to explore Klewki primarily through its architecture, its position between the lakes, or as part of a route.
Church, Chapels and Palace
The church in Klewki dates from the 16th century and features Baroque polychrome decoration. It received a wooden tower in the 19th century. The Church of Saints Valentine and Roch also contains a Baroque high altar from the late 18th century, a Late Gothic crucifix from the 16th century, and a folk-style Pietà from the 16th century. Its furnishings thus combine Late Gothic and folk-style elements from the 16th century with a Baroque altar from the late 18th century. The history of its religious architecture and furnishings therefore spans the 16th to the 19th centuries.
The two chapels in Klewki are two storeys high and built of exposed red brick. The first storey has a small niche and blind niches, meaning shallow, closed wall recesses; the second has an opening that is open on all four sides. The different details give each storey its own architectural structure.
The eclectic palace, dating from the mid-19th century, has a surviving park. Eclecticism describes architecture that combines design traditions; the palace thus adds a different stylistic note to the account of the church and chapels. The palace and park provide another point of reference if you would like to place Klewki in the context of its architectural history.
Two Routes with Different Itineraries
The red-marked Szlak 36 passes through Olsztyn, Szczęsne, Klewki, Klewki PKP, Kaborno, Nowa Wieś, Kopanki and Łajs, and possibly Małszewo. It is 25.5 kilometres long, moderately difficult and hilly; the route is marked on the ground. The estimated travel time is 2 hours and 50 minutes.
The Linowska Struga Route starts in the village of Klewki and passes Lake Linowskie, the Linowska Struga, Lake Klebarskie and Lake Silickie. It then follows the Wiktorii Canal and the Kiermas Canal to Lake Bogdańskie. Its sequence of lakes, the Struga and canals provides a different way of orienting yourself from the sequence of places on Szlak 36.
For practical planning, the starting point of the Linowska Struga Route is a clear difference: it begins in the village, whereas Klewki is one stop in a longer sequence of places on Szlak 36. For Szlak 36, the length, hilly terrain and estimated travel time are the key planning details; the Linowska Struga Route can be understood through its itinerary and the bodies of water listed. If you plan to take either route, check local conditions beforehand.
