Pilgrimage, routes of varying lengths, and historical museums give Olsztyński several clear starting points for planning a trip. Religious history takes center stage in Gietrzwałd; the hiking routes described range from 21.9 to 130 kilometers. There are also cycling, canoeing, and horseback riding routes. This lets you choose a focus for your stay instead of trying to fit every theme into a fixed itinerary.

Pilgrimage and Religious Heritage in Gietrzwałd

Gietrzwałd is the only place in Poland where the Catholic Church has officially recognized Marian apparitions. The Kapliczka Objawień marks the site where the apparitions took place from June 27 to September 16, 1877. The Cudowne Źródełko is another specific point of interest: its water flows into a stone well surround decorated with marble reliefs.

The Szlak Świętej Warmii tourism project is also connected with Olsztyński County. The county leads the project together with Braniewski County, Lidzbarski County, and the City of Olsztyn. This offers two distinct perspectives for planning a trip: the history and named sites in Gietrzwałd, and a joint tourism project involving several public partners.

Hiking, Cycling, Canoeing, and Horseback Riding Routes

The hiking routes vary in both length and course. The 49.9-kilometer Do źródeł Łyny route runs from Olsztyn or Wysoka Brama via Obrońców Tobruku, Jaroty, Bartążek, Kielary, the Łyna River, Ruś, the Lalka Peninsula, Kurki PKS, Brzeźno Łyńskie, and Łyna to Dobrzyń. The 40.8-kilometer Napoleonsweg runs from Barkweda via Gutkowo, Mątki, Jonkowo, Łomy, Pupki, Gołogóra, Skolity, and Dąbrówka to Konradowo.

The 130-kilometer Olsztyn–Lipowiec section of the Way of St. James runs via Łupstych, Gietrzwałd, Parwółki, Stare Jabłonki, Ostróda, Frednowy, Tynwałd, Szałkowo, Iława, Radomno, and Nowe Miasto Lubawskie to Lipowiec, and then continues to Toruń. A different kind of hiking option is the 21.9-kilometer Jezioro Kośno educational nature trail: it begins at the bridge over the Kośna on the eastern shore of Lake Kośno, passes through Łajsy and along the lake’s western shore, and ends back at the bridge. The named waypoints and distances make it easier to distinguish the routes by their course and length.

Specific routes are also listed for other ways of getting around. The 40.7-kilometer Gościniec Niborski cycling route runs from Olsztyn (Stary Dwór) via Bartąg, Lake Łańskie, and Kurki to Napiwoda. The 14-kilometer canoe route on Lake Wadąg and the Wadąg River runs from Słupy to the Łyna power station. For horseback riding, the 9.7-kilometer Bałdy route is described; it runs from Bałdy to Lake Gim and back. The different types of routes provide a clear guide when choosing what interests you on your trip.

Museums and Local History

The Powiatowe Atelier Kultury SYNAGOGA is now housed in the former synagogue in Barczewo. In Olsztynek, an open-air museum offers another way to explore regional history: it was relocated there from Królewiec in 1940 and is one of the oldest museums in Poland. In the town hall attic, the Multimedialne Muzeum Obozu Jenieckiego Stalag IB i Historii Olsztynka presents the history of Olsztynek and of the First and Second World Wars, with particular emphasis on Stalag IB Hohenstein.

Landscape and Getting Around

The Las Warmiński nature reserve is located in the municipalities of Purda and Stawiguda. Established in 1982, it covers 1,798.2 hectares. It protects forest and aquatic communities characteristic of Warmia, with a diverse range of plants, animals, and birds. Its size and conservation purpose give the landscape a different scale from that of the routes and museums described here.

The location of the Gietrzwałd municipality along National Road 16, the Droga Tysiąca Jezior Północy, is also relevant for getting around. A railway line in the municipality was built between 1871 and 1873; this indicates when it was constructed.

If you are looking for hotels in Olsztyński, first decide what you want to focus on: pilgrimage and religious heritage in Gietrzwałd, museums and history in Olsztynek, or a specific route.
