A gravestone beneath the pulpit, a carved granite stone in the church tower and a hillfort site with a provisional date give Boreczno several historical points of interest. The blue Prusów cycling route also passes through Boreczno.

Church, heritage status and legend

Beneath the pulpit of the church in Boreczno is a gravestone depicting an armoured Renaissance knight. The figure is identified as Johannes von Schönaich, an owner of Boreczno in the 16th century. The depiction, name and period of ownership connect the artwork with the history of the village. The parish Church of the Holy Cross is listed both in the Polish register of monuments and in the monument list. The Pastorówka in Boreczno is also included in both records.

A carved granite stone protrudes from the masonry in the upper part of the church tower. A legend passed down to the present day connects it with a woman’s penance. The gravestone and tower stone represent different forms of local tradition: a person is identified on the gravestone, while the stone is associated with a legend. Heritage status is a separate matter: it applies to the parish church and the Pastorówka, while the gravestone and legend provide their own historical points of interest.

Hillfort site near Boreczno

The hillfort site, site 5, is located near Boreczno. Three ditches and two lines of ramparts mark the site. Preliminary research findings date it to the Early Iron Age. This period is much earlier than the 16th century, with which Johannes von Schönaich is associated; however, the dating remains provisional. In contrast to the named identification of the Renaissance knight, the hillfort points to a much older period that must nevertheless be treated with caution. The ditches and rampart lines describe the layout of the site; the Early Iron Age should be understood separately as a provisional dating.

The Prusów cycling route

The blue Prusów cycling route runs from Iława to Zalewo. The route is listed as 68.7 kilometres long, with a journey time of seven hours. Boreczno lies along the route. If you are considering this route as a major part of your trip, its distance and journey time provide an indication of the overall commitment involved. The route passes through forests, fields and built-up areas, mostly across hilly terrain without strenuous climbs. The surface includes asphalt and gravel roads. The landscape, elevation profile and surface describe different aspects of the cycling route. When planning, it is therefore worth considering both the terrain and the road surface. As surface conditions may change, check current conditions before setting out.

These offer different considerations when planning a trip: the cycling route can be assessed by distance and journey time; the heritage sites by their heritage status, named identification, legend and provisional archaeological dating.
