The Kanał Dobrzycki runs past Dobrzyki; alongside the waterway, specific historical details shape the village: a stone road bridge, a 19th-century school building, and ecclesiastical architectural history. The view thus extends from a link between two lakes to individual traces within the village itself.

The Kanał Dobrzycki between two lakes

The Kanał Dobrzycki connects Lake Jeziorak with Lake Ewingi and runs past Dobrzyki. It is 2,400 metres long and is considered the oldest section of the Kanał Elbląski, as well as Poland’s oldest navigable canal. Today it is used exclusively for tourism; goods traffic, for which it was formerly used, no longer takes place there.

A 39-kilometre sailing route on Jeziorak and Ewingi runs from Iława via Siemiany, Matyty and Dobrzyki to Zalewo. The figures refer to different scales: 2,400 metres for the canal, and 39 kilometres for the route across the lakes. This change in scale is relevant when planning a trip, because Dobrzyki is one of several stops along the longer route.

Bridge over the waterway

In Dobrzyki, a stone road bridge crosses the Kanał Dobrzycki. It is a replica of a predecessor that was nearly 100 years older. Comparing the bridge with its older counterpart adds a layer of architectural history to the waterway: not only the canal itself, but also the crossing is part of the village’s history. The bridge is a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in infrastructure and architectural history.

Village history and ecclesiastical details

Dobrzyki was established in the second half of the 13th century. A 19th-century school building stands in the village centre. The two dates distinguish the village’s origins from a much later building and provide different chronological reference points for its history.

A church in Dobrzyki dates from 1320 to 1330 and has a Gothic portal. Attached to the left of the church’s main entrance is a foot or hand block that was used to restrain convicts and prisoners. The portal and the block illustrate two different aspects: the design of the church building and a historical penal practice.

The entry in the heritage register of Iławski County, with registration number A-1053, concerns the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Dobrzyki; it has been listed since 31 July 1968. The entry covers the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and its associated churchyard.

When looking for a holiday apartment, the scope of your trip is therefore a useful guide: should Dobrzyki be the main focus of your visit, or should the longer route through several places shape your stay? If the route is the deciding factor, check the latest information about its operation in advance.
