Końskie combines castle and park history with distinctive details in two churches and a route to memorial sites. There is also the SOWA, with an exhibition and opportunities for hands-on exploration. When choosing a hotel in Konskie, this mix can help guide you: you can focus on architecture and history, remembrance, or practical workshops.

Castle and Park History

Jan Małachowski began building the castle and park complex in Końskie around 1748, after securing town rights for the place from King Augustus III. In the first half of the 19th century, Stanisław Małachowski had the architect Franciszek Maria Lanci come to Końskie. Lanci designed the Egyptian Orangery, a Neo-Gothic chapel and the park wall with towers.

The two construction phases provide a timeline for the complex’s history: Lanci’s designs in the first half of the 19th century followed the beginnings around 1748. At the same time, the different names of the structures show that the surviving details range from the orangery and chapel to the park wall flanked by towers. Those interested in architecture will find more here than a single date: the patron, architect and specific designs can be considered together.

Church Art and Historical Details

A sundial dating from 1621 is located on the southern retaining wall of the presbytery of the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas and St Adalbert. The stone Late Baroque high altar dates from 1749 and features a crucifix beneath a canopy supported by columns. The sundial on the wall and the depiction on the altar are distinct, precisely located details of the same church.

Another historical stop is the Church of St John the Baptist and St Anne. The Małachowski family had it built by Jan Faygel in 1770. During restoration work, old frescoes were uncovered and restored there in 2010. The information about the churches thus leads from an 18th-century commission to later work on the interior. A cultural stay offers two different perspectives: individual historical features in the collegiate church and the frescoes in the other church.

Memorial Sites and Hands-on Discoveries

The “Szlakiem zabytków i miejsc pamięci” (Trail of Monuments and Memorial Sites) leads to Katyń Avenue, where oaks and plaques commemorate the victims murdered in 1940. On Warsztatowa Street, an obelisk commemorates the violent death of Captain Jan Stoiński, the first commander of the Końskie ZWZ-AK district. Together, these stops give the route a clear focus: remembrance of victims and a named individual sits alongside the churches’ architectural and artistic themes.

The SOWA in Końskie offers a permanent exhibition, a hands-on workshop and workshops. This is a different way to explore than the historic buildings and memorial sites: hands-on discovery is explicitly part of what is offered here. Check the current opening status and programme before your visit. This lets you choose between architectural history, church art, memorial sites and workshops according to the topics that interest you most during your stay.
