Radlin’s history can be viewed from several perspectives: a biographical connection leads to Maria Skłodowska-Curie, while the landscape draws attention to Zdobiec Hill and the area’s geology. There are also traces of earlier work and community life. These topics offer different points of connection if you would like to consider culture and landscape together when choosing a destination.

Local History: Biography, Wool and the Forest Railway

Maria Skłodowska-Curie spent part of her childhood in Radlin; her grandparents lived there. This biographical connection is part of the local stories about people and their origins. The former wool processing industry also tells us about living conditions in the area: residents processed wool to make a living on the poor, infertile soil. Here, the land and livelihoods are therefore part of a shared historical context.

Another period in the area’s history dates back to the 1930s. At that time, a forest railway line ran through Radlin, connecting Kielce with Złota Woda near Łagów. The railway was used to transport timber from the surrounding forests to Kielce. The line thus represents a historical means of transporting timber and complements the history of wool processing with a different perspective on work and transport.

The KGW “Radlinianki” Rural Housewives’ Association began its activities in Radlin in October 2013. It is dedicated to preserving old customs and preparing traditional dishes. The association’s activities include picnics and celebrations for the local and municipal community. Together with Radlin Primary School, it organizes evenings marking 11 November, events for Children’s Day, and Easter and Christmas workshops.

Zdobiec and the Landscape Around Radlin

At 319 metres above sea level, Zdobiec Hill is Radlin’s highest point. Radlin also has small hills made of limestone, dolomite and sandstone. These details describe different aspects: Zdobiec is a named high point, while the rock types identify the material making up the smaller hills. The landscape can thus be understood in terms of both its elevations and its geological structure.

There are deposits of natural carbonate raw materials in the area around Radlin and Zdobiec Hill. Their extraction has left visible pits and spoil heaps in the landscape. The area therefore features both natural rock formations and visible traces of resource extraction. These are distinct elements to consider when looking at the landscape: Zdobiec’s elevation, the rocks of the small hills, and the landforms created by extraction in the surrounding area.

Community Life

Since 2014, Radlin has had a village community centre equipped with the necessary facilities. An inclusive playground, a sports field and an outdoor fitness area are located nearby. These facilities provide residents with places to relax and meet. Together with the activities of KGW “Radlinianki,” they form another aspect of Radlin: alongside its historical connections and landscape, the village also has places and events that bring the community together.

When planning your trip, you can give more weight to the topics that interest you. The local history offers biographical, economic and transport-related connections; the landscape can be explored through its high point, rocks and traces of extraction. This distinction can help you assess Radlin as a destination and find a holiday apartment that suits your travel plans.
