Around Kielce, a range of cultural and historical themes come together: rural architecture and settlement patterns in Tokarnia, religious history at Święty Krzyż, Henryk Sienkiewicz’s life in Oblęgorek, and the history of a medieval fortress in Chęciny. Each of these places offers a different focus for a stay. Those interested in village history will choose a different approach from visitors who want to focus on literary history or a royal castle.

Cultural sites with distinct focuses

The Ethnographic Park in Tokarnia is an open-air museum covering more than 65 hectares, with over 80 historic structures. They include farmhouses, barns, windmills, churches and manor houses. The museum aims to recreate typical village settlement patterns from four subregions of the Kielecczyzna: the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, the Sandomierz Upland and the Nida Basin. Its approach therefore focuses not only on individual types of buildings, but also on different village settlement patterns. The museum offers themed guided tours for groups and individual visitors; reservations are required.

Święty Krzyż is an active religious site. It was once home to the Benedictine Order; today, the monastery is inhabited by Missionaries of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The former Benedictine presence and current religious use therefore belong to different periods. This gives the site a different focus from Tokarnia: here, visitors encounter an active religious site, while Tokarnia is about historic buildings and reconstructed settlement patterns.

In 1958, Poland’s first museum devoted to the life and work of Nobel laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz opened in the manor house in Oblęgorek. His home has been recreated on the ground floor, in the historic interiors, with a study, living room, dining room, smoking room and bedroom. These rooms give the biographical focus a tangible form. Alongside his literary work, the recreated home environment is central to the museum.

In the Middle Ages, the Royal Castle of Chęciny was one of the Crown’s most important fortresses. Its historical focus is therefore the castle’s role as a fortress. Together with the literary museum in Oblęgorek and the rural buildings in Tokarnia, it shows the variety of cultural and historical themes in the region.

Bus connections and hiking trail

City bus No. 31 runs from Kielce to Jaskinia Raj. The “Jaskinia Raj” bus stop is about 1,300 metres, or a 15–20-minute walk, from the cave entrance. City bus line 31 to Chęciny also stops on Żytnia Street in Kielce. Before travelling, check the operator’s latest information about routes and stops.

For hiking plans, the red Sylwester Kowalczewski Trail is another regional option. It is about 20 kilometres long, starts at Góra Karczówka in Kielce, ends at the market square in Chęciny and passes Jaskinia Raj. The roughly 20 kilometres describe the entire trail between its endpoints; the 1,300 metres, or 15–20-minute walk, refer only to the section from the bus stop to the cave entrance. These figures relate to different parts of a trip: the connection between Kielce and Chęciny on the one hand, and the walk from the stop to the cave on the other.
