The black “Skały i jaskinie” cycling route passes through Polichno: it is about 26 kilometres long and takes approximately three hours by bicycle. Nearby, a school, exhibition and monument tell the story of the area’s gliding history. Some of the sites are in Polichno, while others are in nearby Gościniec.

Cycling: Route and Trail Section

The black “Skały i jaskinie” route passes through Polichno. It is approximately 26 kilometres long, and the ride takes about three hours by bicycle. Use this as a rough time frame for the tour, allowing time for breaks and other activities. Check the current route conditions locally before setting off.

Another route-related feature is the first section of the foot and cycling path, which is just under 1.6 kilometres long. It opened in 2022 and connects Gościniec with Polichno in the area around the school. This distance refers to the first section; it is not the length of the black cycling route. The two figures provide different information for planning: the black route has a stated length and approximate cycling time, while the first path section has a stated length and connects the two locations.

Gliding History in Polichno

The LOPP Polichno–Pińczów Gliding School was established by merging the gliding clubs of Pińczów and Polichno and was named after General Leon Barbecki. Its establishment and naming represent two distinct historical details: the merger reflects the joining of the two gliding clubs, while the name commemorates its namesake.

At Polichno Primary School, information boards tell visitors about General Stanisław Skalski, one of the best-known pilots of the Second World War. The school also houses numerous exhibits related to the gliding school and an exhibition on the region’s aviation history. Its scope thus extends from an individual pilot, through the history of the school, to the region’s aviation history.

Monument and Commemorations in Gościniec

In Gościniec, near Polichno, stands the Aviators’ Monument, erected in 1992. It commemorates the heyday of the gliding school, as well as its instructors and students—Polish pilots who fought for the country’s independence during the Second World War. Every September, the Municipality and Town of Chęciny organises commemorations there for aviators, instructors and graduates of the school who fought and fell in the Second World War.

Knowing which places are where is helpful for planning: the monument and commemorations are in Gościniec, not Polichno itself; the school and the exhibition at the primary school are associated with Polichno. This lets you distinguish the cycling trip, with its approximate duration, from the gliding history spread across several locations and decide which focus better suits your stay.
