Olszanica is best explored through its palace complex and landscape park: architecture, historical milestones and visible remains of older fortifications all contribute to a distinctive picture of the place. This gives your travel plans a clear focus on culture and landscape. Information about routes in the associated municipality is another option. You can thus consider the local history and a municipal route offering as two separate topics.

Palace complex with several building phases

The palace complex in Olszanica comprises an impressive eclectic palace, an outbuilding, a bridge and a park with remains of fortifications. A well-preserved palace complex, it dates back to the 17th century and is one of the few estates of its kind in Lesko County. The complex offers a broader view than the palace alone: the outbuilding, bridge and park are also part of the overall picture. Eclectic describes a style that incorporates elements from various styles; the term classifies the palace architecturally without specifying individual influences.

The palace itself was built toward the end of the 19th century on an island surrounded by a moat. In 1905, the Juściński family, the last owners of Olszanica, renovated it, giving the palace its present-day appearance. This brings two distinct periods of construction together: the origins of the palace complex in the 17th century and the palace’s later construction and renovation.

Historical milestones of the place

In the 15th century, the village of Olszanica belonged to the Kmita family. The first archival references to a manor house in Olszanica date from 1580. These early milestones relate to the village and the manor house; they predate the palace and show that the history of the place has several layers. Together with the origins of the palace complex, they provide a timeline that is not limited to a single building.

Landscape park and visible traces

The landscape park in Olszanica was laid out in the 19th century on the site of an older fortification. Traces of ramparts, embankments and moats are visible there. Two layers of history thus meet in the park: the creation of the landscape park and the site’s earlier use for fortification. The park is more than a backdrop for the buildings; its visible features also contribute to the history of the palace complex.

Among the park’s distinctive natural features is its largest pedunculate oak. It grows on the ramparts around the upper ponds and has a circumference of 610 cm. Its location connects a particular natural feature with the traces of the park’s terrain: the ramparts and ponds place the tree within the landscape. For a stay that takes in nature and landscape history as well as architecture, the oak is another clearly identified point of interest.

Nordic walking in the associated municipality

The “Gmina Olszanica” Nordic Walking Park complements information about the area with routes in the associated municipality. It has three trails: a 4.9 km green loop, a 9 km red out-and-back route and a 9.3 km black loop. Route type and length can be compared separately: there are two loops and one out-and-back route; the green loop is the shortest, and the black loop is 4.4 km longer. The trailheads for Routes 1 and 3 are in Zwierzyń, near a bend in the San River; the trailhead for Route 2 is in Orelec. This lets you compare route type, length and starting point as separate factors when planning.
