Around Tylawa, you can plan your hikes around specific routes: one leads to Olchowiec, another starts at the church and passes through several villages on the way to Baranie, and a third crosses Tylawa on the way to Dukla Pass. For Lemko history, there is also the museum in Zyndranowa, close to Tylawa. This lets you consider hiking in the village and a cultural destination nearby as separate parts of your trip.
Hiking from and through Tylawa
The yellow-marked PTTK hiking trail leads from Tylawa to Olchowiec; the walk takes about two and a half hours. Since this is an approximate time, use it as a guide when planning and consider how much of your stay you want to devote to the hike.
The Tylawa–Baranie trail is 15.2 kilometers long and starts at the church in Tylawa. It connects to the Blue Border Trail via a connecting path. The route passes through Smereczne, Wilsznia, and Olchowiec before reaching Baranie. This makes it different from the hike to Olchowiec: on this route, Olchowiec is along the way, while Baranie is the destination.
Another hike, 17.6 kilometers long, leads from the hermitage of Saint John of Dukla to Dukla Pass and crosses Tylawa. Its starting and ending points are therefore outside the village. This helps distinguish it from the Tylawa–Baranie route, which starts at the church in the village. Before setting out, check local trail conditions on both routes.
For planning your hikes, time and distance are different measures: an approximate walking time is given for Olchowiec, while the Tylawa–Baranie route and the route to Dukla Pass are described in kilometers. Do not compare these figures directly. Choose based on whether an approximate walking time or a specific route would be more helpful for your plans.
Lemko culture in nearby Zyndranowa
The Lemko Culture Museum is in Zyndranowa, three kilometers from the turnoff in Tylawa. It features an ethnographic and historical exhibition, as well as memorabilia from the Battle of Dukla Pass. When planning your trip, consider it a cultural destination in nearby Zyndranowa, not an attraction in Tylawa itself.
The museum’s historic buildings date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One specific architectural detail is the chyża: it was built in 1860 and served as a smoke house until 1901. The site’s history therefore includes both its former buildings and their documented uses.
The historic buildings are furnished with original household items, agricultural tools, furniture, crafts, clothing, and folk art. The exhibition thus brings together different aspects of daily life and craftsmanship. Along with the ethnographic and historical exhibition and memorabilia from the Battle of Dukla Pass, these displays offer a cultural experience that encompasses both everyday objects and historical remembrance.
Workshops are occasionally held on the museum grounds, including Kiczka spinning and shingle splitting. The museum also hosts the annual Lemko traditions festival “Od Rusal do Jana.” If a workshop or the festival is important to your trip, check the dates in advance so you can plan your visit around them.
