Polana offers specific points of comparison for planning your trip: trails of varying distances and walking times, as well as local history reflected in a collection, church sites, and memorials. If you want to weigh up trail times and cultural stops, you can sort the described options by duration and subject.

Trails by time and type

The 9.3-kilometre cultural and nature trail “Jaskinia w Rosolinie” runs from Polana to Czarna Dolna. The stated walking time is 3 hours and 30 minutes. Check the route conditions before setting out. This gives you both endpoints and a specific time estimate to plan your walk.

Unmarked walking trail No. 1, “Przez Łazy i Rosoliniec,” is about 7 kilometres long; the stated walking time is around 3 hours and 30 minutes. Walking trail No. 4, “Potokiem Kosów,” is also unmarked: it is about 5.5 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of approximately 3 hours. Both suggested trails start in central Polana.

These two walking trails offer a useful comparison of the stated figures: Trail No. 1 is about 1.5 kilometres longer, yet has a similar stated walking time to Trail No. 4. For a longer time frame, choose between Trail No. 5, “Na Otryt przez Wańka Dział,” at about 14.5 kilometres and 4 hours 30 minutes, and Trail No. 6, “Do dawnej kopalni ropy naftowej,” at around 12 kilometres and about 4 hours of walking. These unmarked trails also start in central Polana.

The blue PTTK hiking trail runs from Polana towards Przełęcz pod Hulskiem; the stated time for the stretch from Polana to that point is 2 hours. The Szlak Papieski has the same stated walking time and direction. This gives you two named trails with the same time estimate to consider when planning. A different time frame applies to the Lipie–Polana–Serednie Małe bridleway: Section IV leads to the hamlet of Polana Ostre and takes about six hours on horseback.

Local history and memorial sites

The Polańskie Zbiory Historyczne is a local history collection housed in Polana’s village community centre. Its curator is Maria Faran, a resident of the village. The former Greek Catholic Church of St Nicholas is part of the area’s religious history: from 1969 to 2013, it served as a Roman Catholic church; today, it is a chapel in the parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Polana.

Polana residents erected the Krzyż Pamięci in 2018 to mark the centenary of the restoration of Polish independence. The cross commemorates those who died fighting for the freedom of their homeland. Another historical memorial is the Kapliczka Poznarowa: the Tomasz Poznars family had it built in 1929 in gratitude for Tomasz Poznars’s safe return from Ukrainian captivity in 1919.

The Kościelisko in Polana consists of the foundation remains of the former Roman Catholic Church dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord, the churchyard, and a bell tower. This makes the site different in form from the Chapel of St Nicholas: here, the structural remains of the former church, the churchyard, and the tower form a group.

The area’s history also includes its former oil production. There are former oil mines in Polana Ostre; a designated walking trail leads to two shafts. The route description for Section IV of the bridleway names the same hamlet as its destination, with an estimated journey time of about six hours on horseback. You can therefore combine an excursion to Polana Ostre with both the subject of the oil mines and the stated bridle route.

Planning an overnight stay in Polana

If you are considering Polana as a place to stay overnight, you can start by deciding whether your trip will focus more on walking and riding trails, historical sites, or a mix of both. The stated walking times range from two hours to several hours; the bridleway to Polana Ostre is estimated at about six hours on horseback. These time estimates can help you match the different activities to your planned travel pace and choose Polana based on the experiences you actually want to include.
