Miedźno is located in the Miedźno municipality, in Kłobuck County and the Silesian Voivodeship. A landmark in the town’s history is the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. It is a place of interest at 2 Ułańska Street, 42-120 Miedźno. The parish dedicated to Saint Catherine was founded in 1425; however, the present-day church building was constructed several centuries later. This makes it easy to distinguish the parish’s long history from the construction history of the present-day church.

Church and Art History

The present-day church was built between 1872 and 1877 on the site of a wooden church that had burned down. The polychrome paintings discovered during renovation work, dating from the late 19th century, were restored by Professor Jerzy Nowosielski. The Neo-Gothic high altar dates from the 19th century and features a Baroque painting of Saint Catherine of Alexandria from the first half of the 18th century. The historic inventory also includes a monstrance dating from 1620 and a tower clock.

Chapels, Cemetery and Settlement Pattern

The cemetery chapel is another historic site. It was built around 1840 by the Miączyński family. Voivode Miączyński and his family are buried in its crypt. The cemetery also contains a mass grave of insurgents. The Chapel of St John represents another period in the area’s history: around 1900, Miedźno had a chapel of this name; the original building was destroyed in 1939 and replaced by a new one in 1945. Together, the chapels tell different parts of the story: the cemetery chapel dates from around 1840, while the history of the Chapel of St John is marked by destruction and reconstruction in the 20th century.

Miedźno has also preserved a historic linear rural settlement pattern known as “rzędówka”. It stretches from the cemetery to the intersection with the road to Borowa. Unlike the church and chapel, it is not a single building, but a spatial feature of the historic settlement pattern. Looking at the layout of the village rather than just individual buildings, the “rzędówka” offers another perspective on its cultural history.

History in Mokra and a Cycling Route

Nearby Mokra is home to the Museum of Przeworsk Culture and the Memorial Room of the Battle of Mokra. The museum and memorial room offer museum sessions titled “Żywe oblicza historii” for schoolchildren and organised groups. Mokra is also home to the wooden Church of Saints Simon and Jude. Built in 1708, it has a shingle roof and a small Baroque roof turret.

The Folga na Zakolu cycling route offers a different perspective. It is a leisure route connecting six municipalities, including Miedźno. Alongside local cultural history, it provides a tangible regional leisure option to consider when planning your trip. If you plan to ride the route, check current route conditions before setting out.
