Smolany Dąb lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Gremzdy. The village brings together a distinctive landscape, craftsmanship, village history and a cycling route between Sejny and Suwałki. When planning your visit, you can focus on different things: a protected linden tree, blacksmithing, cultural events or time by the water. This makes it easier to weigh up which experiences suit your stay and which accommodation features matter to you.

The linden tree and lake as landmarks

A small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) in Smolany Dąb is protected as a natural monument. Its trunk circumference is 490 centimetres, measured at a height of 1.3 metres; the tree is 24 metres tall. Its circumference and height convey two different measurements of this striking natural monument. Lake Gremzdy also provides a geographic landmark for the village: Smolany Dąb lies on its northeastern shore.

Blacksmithing, local tradition and culture

A local tradition explains the village’s name with reference to an oak by Lake Gremzdy. Settlers are said to have seen a burning oak tree there, interpreted the fire as a good omen and derived the name Smolany Dąb from it. As a local tradition, this story recounts how the name came about; it should not be equated with a verified historical explanation. There was also a tar kiln in the village. Several buildings made of wood and clay have been preserved, including an old forge.

Craftsmanship is also associated with Henryk Borowski. Using traditional blacksmithing techniques, he makes furniture, lamps, railings, gates, signs, logos and advertising lettering. He teaches blacksmithing and has won numerous national competitions. At his forge, he gives demonstrations of artistic and functional metalworking for tour groups and individual tourists.

Teatr Stodolany is associated with cultural initiatives, performances, workshops and gatherings on a variety of topics. The First World War military cemetery is also part of the village’s history. It is the resting place of 412 soldiers: 95 members of the German army and 317 members of the Russian army. These figures offer a concrete insight into the composition of those buried here.

Cycling route between Sejny and Suwałki

A 30-kilometre paved cycling route between Sejny and Suwałki passes through Smolany Dąb. Its length, surface and two endpoints help you factor the route into your own plans. For a specific ride, it is advisable to check the current route and conditions. The cycling route offers a different way to experience the village than exploring its craft and cultural attractions.

Accommodation and time by the water

The Agroturystyka u Oli in Smolany Dąb is a specifically named accommodation option. It has five guest rooms for two to three people each, all with private bathrooms. Guests can use a private beach with a pier on Lake Gremzdy. Also available to guests are a telescope for observing the night sky, particularly nebulae, and various watercraft and pieces of equipment: a boat, a fishing kayak, six touring kayaks, an Omega-class sailboat, SUP boards and a windsurfing board.

These listed amenities set this accommodation apart from the village’s cultural and craft attractions: they relate to guests’ stay and to activities on the water or observing the night sky. This lets you base your accommodation choice on the features that actually matter to you, without conflating them with Smolany Dąb’s distinct experiences.
