Sejny offers two distinct ways to shape a stay: the Minor Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the former Dominican monastery provide cultural and historical interest, while a regional hiking trail also passes through the town. In the basilica, a Renaissance building, a medieval devotional image and an organ with parts dating from different periods come together. The monastery adds exhibition spaces and an ethnographic perspective. When planning your stay, you can first consider whether cultural history or a section of the hiking trail should be the main focus.

The Basilica’s Cultural History

The Minor Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sejny was built in the early 17th century in the Renaissance style. In 1973, the Holy See elevated the church to the rank of a minor basilica. Its construction date and ecclesiastical status mark different aspects of its history. Inside the basilica is a Gothic shrine statue of the Madonna and Child from the early 15th century. The devotional image therefore predates the Renaissance building; this time gap helps place the basilica in a context that spans more than a single century.

The organ also has two distinct dates: its Rococo case dates from 1762, and its mechanism from 1907. These dates refer to different parts of the instrument, not to a single date of origin. The building, devotional image and instrument thus represent different points in time. Anyone interested in architectural history and furnishings will find several distinct aspects here.

Exhibition Spaces and Events at the Monastery

The former Dominican monastery complements the basilica’s architectural history with art and exhibition themes. The monastery houses exhibition halls, the “Zapiecek” Gallery, the Diocesan Museum and an ethnographic room. This room highlights traces of Sejny’s cultural diversity. The monastery complex thus offers several different perspectives: exhibition spaces, a diocesan museum and a focus on cultural diversity. Those who would rather focus on collections and exhibitions than on sacred architecture will find a distinct area of interest here.

Exhibitions, concerts and academic symposia take place in the monastery complex; concerts are held in the courtyard. If an event will determine your travel dates, check the current program in advance.

Sejny as Part of a Hiking Route

The regional red hiking trail No. 1 runs for 210 kilometers from Jastrzębna via Sejny to Rakówek near Gołdap. The route is therefore not limited to Sejny; the town lies along a trail that extends far beyond it. It is important to note that 210 kilometers is the total route length, not the distance of a single hike during a stay or a loop around the town. If hiking is your main focus, plan your chosen section separately and do not mistake the total distance for a local walking route.

Choosing to focus on hiking involves a different set of considerations than exploring the basilica and monastery: at the cultural sites, the focus is on buildings and exhibition spaces, while on the long-distance trail, it is on the section you want to walk. If you want to combine both, treat your planned hiking section as a separate part of your stay.
