St. Catherine’s Parish Church, a tradition of sowing grain in the shape of a heart and cross, and a marked cycling route give Grodzisko concrete reasons to visit. Cultural history and the cycling route appeal to different interests: the town’s history stretches from archaeological traces to dated church buildings, while the cycling connection includes several named places. This makes it possible to explore Grodzisko both through its historical themes and its role on a cycling route.
St. Catherine’s Church: Building History and Furnishings
St. Catherine’s Parish Church was first mentioned in 1516; the present building dates from 1812. In 1924, a sacristy and a chapel were added on its north side. Its historic furnishings included side altars dedicated to St. Valentine and St. Mary Magdalene. In the register as of December 31, 2023, the church is listed as a historic building under number 1132/66; the years 1812 and 1924 are also cited there.
Traces from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages
The town’s history goes back long before the church’s construction dates. Grodzisko is considered one of the oldest settlements in the Ziemia Strzelecka area; archaeological finds from the Neolithic period (4200–1700 BC) point to this. In the early Middle Ages, a fortified settlement stood here. The town’s name is also part of this historical interpretation: Grodzisko means “destroyed castle” and refers to the settlement’s early history. The finds reveal a period considerably earlier than the fortified settlement, while the town’s name is linked to the medieval interpretation.
A Collection on Local History
A post dated July 10, 2026 describes the collection at the local history room in Grodzisko, which includes a parish room, several village rooms and a room from the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL). The collection broadens the picture beyond church architecture and early settlement history to include village life and the more recent past. If you would like to include the local history room in your plans, check in advance whether a visit is possible.
Traditions with a Date and a Local Connection
A tradition shared by several localities is observed in Rozmierz, Grodzisko and Kadłub: grain kernels are sown in the shape of a heart and cross. In 2020, this tradition was added to the national list of intangible cultural heritage. The St. Valentine’s indulgence is held every year on February 14 in the vicinity of Grodzisko; residents of neighboring villages make a pilgrimage to it. For planning your trip, the distinction is useful: the indulgence takes place on a fixed annual date, while the heart-and-cross tradition is rooted in three localities.
Grodzisko on the Cycling Route
The marked cycling route runs from Strzelce Opolskie through Rozmierz and Grodzisko to Krasiejów, providing a cycling connection through Grodzisko. Maps are available to download for the route; check before setting off whether they are available. The order of the named places gives you a concrete starting point for planning your own ride. The cycling connection thus adds another perspective on Grodzisko to its religious, archaeological and church-related themes.
