Debrzyca’s traces of the past span from St James’s Parish Church to crosses and chapels dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. There are also routes with different profiles: a 92-kilometre day trip, a moderately challenging 30-kilometre route, and a black cycling trail that reaches Debrzyca from Lisięcice after 4.5 kilometres. If you would like to compare cultural history and routes, the town offers several distinct points of interest.
Churches, Chapels and Crosses
St James’s Parish Church in Debrzyca is listed in the voivodeship register of monuments and dates from the 16th/17th and 18th centuries. Within the church wall stands a cross from 1883. The church and the cross thus offer two different points of reference in time: a building history spanning several centuries and an object on the church wall with a precise date.
The chapels can also be distinguished by their dates. Next to Kościelna 25a is a chapel from the late 19th century, and next to Kościuszki 43 is one from the early 20th century. Another chapel, next to Zielona 2, dates from around 1880. The dates are not all equally precise: alongside the approximate date and broader periods, a stone cross opposite Kościuszki 7 is dated to 1903. The Lurdzka Chapel is also one of Debrzyca’s monuments.
A substantial, two-towered chapel stands beside a field road in the vicinity of Debrzyca; it is considered exceptional for the region. This distinguishes it from sites in the town itself: the parish church, the cross within the church wall and the addresses mentioned above are in Debrzyca, while this chapel is located in the surrounding area.
Routes with Different Profiles
Debrzyca lies on the Szlak Joannitów (Knights Hospitaller Trail). The route is 92 kilometres long and designed as a one-day excursion following the historic traces of the Knights Hospitaller. Another route, “Śladami naszych zabytków” (“In the Footsteps of Our Monuments”), is 30 kilometres long, has a moderate difficulty level and passes through Debrzyca. It is not described as a cycling trail; the length and difficulty details refer to the route.
A separate trail is specified for cycling: the black cycling trail reaches Debrzyca from Lisięcice after 4.5 kilometres. The three route descriptions are not interchangeable: the 92 kilometres and one-day excursion refer to the Szlak Joannitów, the 30 kilometres and moderate difficulty level to “Śladami naszych zabytków,” and the 4.5 kilometres to the black cycling trail from Lisięcice. The well-preserved road paving on a street in Debrzyca is also a notable urban feature.
More Cultural and Landscape Topics in Głubczyce
The wider destination of Głubczyce offers additional, distinct historical themes. Głubczyce Town Hall was built in 1570 on the site of a 14th-century merchant’s house, using elements of the earlier building. The town hall was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in 2006–2008. The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Głubczyce dates from the second half of the 13th century. It has an organ from 1907 with more than 60 stops, made by the Gebrüder Rieger workshop.
Another example is the Franciscan church and monastery complex in Głubczyce. It was built from 1753 to 1770 to a design by Jan Innocenty Töpper of Prudnik. The complex includes a Baroque church and a distinctive four-winged monastery arranged in a quadrangle around an inner courtyard.
The protected Mokre–Lewice Landscape Area is part of the region’s natural heritage. It covers 6,527 hectares, includes part of the Opawskie Mountains and features gorges as well as the river valleys of the Troja, Osobłoga and Opawica. Rare and protected plants grow there, and the area also serves as a refuge for protected animals. In this way, Debrzyca’s specific cultural sites and routes differ from the broader historical and landscape themes of the wider destination of Głubczyce.
