Głubczyce Town Hall was built in 1570 on the site of a 14th-century merchant’s house, using parts of the earlier building. It was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in 2006–2008. Its history sits alongside religious buildings dating from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
Town Hall and Churches from Different Centuries
The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Głubczyce dates from the second half of the 13th century. It has an organ with more than 60 stops, built in 1907 by the Gebrüder Rieger workshop. A later phase in the area’s architectural history is represented by the Franciscan church and monastery complex, built between 1753 and 1770 to a design by Jan Innocenty Töpper of Prudnik. The complex includes a Baroque church and a distinctive four-winged monastery. Its wings form a quadrangle with an inner courtyard.
Churches with their own architectural histories can also be found in other localities in the municipality. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Opawica, a class “O” historic monument, was built between 1701 and 1706. The Church of John the Baptist in Chomiąża dates from 1575. These dates offer a glimpse of the range of periods represented by the municipality’s religious buildings.
Grobniki: Castle, Chapel and Tradition
In Grobniki, the castle dates from the 16th century and was remodelled in the 19th century. St. Barbara’s Chapel dates from 1701. Beside it is a spring well, which local tradition has credited with miraculous powers since the 17th century. Until the end of the Second World War, the well was one of the larger pilgrimage sites in Silesia. In Grobniki, therefore, architectural history is accompanied by an explicitly historical religious tradition.
