In Ponikiew, cycling routes, wetlands, and Kurpie history take center stage. The village is located in the Masovian Voivodeship, in Pułtusk County and the Municipality of Pułtusk. The Szlak Narwiański approaches from the direction of Pułtusk; from Ponikiew, a cycling route continues along forest and field paths to the Rezerwat Bartnia nature reserve. This lets you take nature and village history into account when planning your trip.
Cycling Routes and Landscape
The Szlak Narwiański approaches Ponikiew from the direction of Pułtusk along a road lined with forest. A cycling route continues from the village along forest and field paths to Rezerwat Bartnia; signs mark the arrival there. The two route features offer different points of orientation: a forested approach to Ponikiew and a signposted arrival at the nature reserve.
The Szlak Narwiański landscape includes marshes and wetlands, as well as extensive meadows and pastures along the Narew. It also features views of the river and protected areas of Nadbużański Landscape Park. There is also a wetland on the road to Ponikiew, one of the few remaining marsh areas in the lower Narew Valley.
Nature Watching
A grey heron nesting site is one of the natural highlights along the Szlak Narwiański. Observe the colony from the road and do not approach it. A mute swan’s nest may be visible from the road in April, May, or early June; whether it can be seen varies from year to year. Zgorzej Struga is also associated with numerous beaver lodges.
Kurpie History and Village Character
Ponikiew is surrounded by the forests of Puszcza Biała. The farms lie directly along the road, forming a traditional rural streetscape. At a road junction stands a roadside chapel whose roof design references church architecture.
The village’s history is connected with Kurpie settlement: in the 18th century, the bishops of Płock brought Kurpie settlers from the Green Forest and established four farmsteads in the village. The architecture along the Szlak Narwiański also reflects Kurpie tradition: the route features old wooden houses with thatched roofs and decorative shutters.
