Józefów offers several distinct focal points for a stay: nature reserves and hiking trails, distinctive architecture, and the history of the Muzeum 2 Korpusu Polskiego. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether nature, architectural history or the museum’s historical perspective should take precedence. The trail lengths and their different themes provide concrete points of reference.
Nature Reserves and Hiking Trails
Part of the Mazowiecki Landscape Park lies within Józefów. The town is also home to three nature reserves: Wyspy Świderskie, Wyspy Zawadowskie and Świder. This means that its natural setting includes both a section of the landscape park and three individually named reserves.
The MZ-5085y hiking trail, “Szlak nad brzegiem Wisły,” is 14.5 km long. Its route through Józefów follows ul. Podstołeczna, runs along the boundary of the Wyspy Zawadowskie Nature Reserve, passes through Wyspy Świderskie, and continues along ul. Górki and ul. Nadwiślańska.
The 9.5 km MZ-5081z hiking trail follows ul. Główna, ul. Dobra, ul. Sikorskiego, the railway crossing in Michalin, ul. Graniczna, ul. Słoneczna, ul. Szeroka, ul. 3 Maja, ul. Kopernika, ul. Wawerska, ul. Ogrodowa, ul. Dworska and ul. Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego, ending at the boundary of the Wyspy Świderskie Nature Reserve.
The trails differ in length by five kilometres: MZ-5085y is the longer of the two. They also differ in their connections to nature. MZ-5085y runs along the boundary of Wyspy Zawadowskie and through Wyspy Świderskie; MZ-5081z reaches the boundary of the Wyspy Świderskie Nature Reserve. Their length and routes provide two concrete points of comparison when choosing a trail.
Another route is the Józefów Trail of the former narrow-gauge railway. It runs from the eastern edge of the town, on the boundary with the municipality of Wiązowna, via the railway station to the monument to the liaison women of the Armia Krajowa. Its name preserves the historical connection to the former narrow-gauge railway, while the locations mentioned also indicate the direction of the route.
Świdermajer and Modernist Architecture
More than 30 properties in Józefów are listed in the register maintained by the Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments. Most are homes dating from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, built in the Świdermajer style. Three features are particularly useful for understanding the town’s architecture: the predominant building type, the period and the named style. The statement about Świdermajer applies to most of the listed properties.
Two distinctive “winged bus shelters” are located within Józefów’s administrative boundaries. Their features include shell roofs, suspended signposts and waiting areas designed in the style of 19th-century railway carriages. They are considered notable examples of 1930s modernist design. Compared with the Świdermajer homes, they also mark a difference in period: most of the homes date from around the turn of the century, while the shelters represent the design of the 1930s.
History and Traffic Education Park
The Muzeum 2 Korpusu Polskiego offers a different focus from the buildings. It is dedicated to preserving and sharing the heritage of General Władysław Anders’s soldiers and the history of Poland’s struggle for freedom and independence. Its scope ranges from the national uprisings and the Second World War to the fate of the Polish Armed Forces in the West.
Józefów has a publicly accessible traffic education park for pedestrians and cyclists, designed to replicate road infrastructure. It includes paved roads, a cycle path with a practice area, pavements, traffic lights and road signs. In addition to the hiking trails, the town’s local offerings therefore include a dedicated traffic education facility for pedestrians and cyclists.
