Żelechów offers several ways to explore the town’s history: the late-Gothic brick church in the centre, traces of the painter Józef Chełmoński, and a wayside shrine from the 17th century. A 35 km cycling route also passes through Żelechów. You can explore the town according to your interests—as a place of architectural and art history, or as a stop on a longer cycling route.

Church: Architecture and Interior

In the centre of Żelechów stands the single-nave brick Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built in the late Gothic style. “Single-nave” means that the church interior is laid out around one main nave; together with the brick construction and late-Gothic design, this gives the building a distinct architectural profile. The church was built in the mid-16th century.

Its construction history can also be read in its interior: the decor is in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. The high altar dates from 1771. The church also contains a Renaissance tombstone for the knight Kacper Miński, dated to around 1570–1580.

When exploring the church, it is worth considering these details as distinct historical reference points: its period of construction and late-Gothic style, its Renaissance and Baroque interior, and individual dated works. The high altar dates from the 18th century, while the tombstone is from roughly the second half of the 16th century. Several periods are therefore represented in one building, without collapsing them into a single construction date.

Józef Chełmoński and Żelechów

Józef Chełmoński’s connection with Żelechów also has several facets. The painter visited the town frequently and found landscape subjects for his paintings in the area around Żelechów. These connections extend beyond the town itself: his visits were to Żelechów, while his landscape subjects came from the surrounding area.

Other historical points of interest are located right in the town. Chełmoński’s grave is in the parish cemetery in Żelechów. He lived in nearby Kuklówka. On 8 April 1914, a funeral service for the painter was held in the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A Wayside Shrine from the 17th Century

Local heritage also includes a stone wayside shrine with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 17th century. A wayside shrine is a religious monument; here, its material, the figure depicted, and its date provide specific points of reference. Together with the church and the connections to Chełmoński, it contributes to a multifaceted picture of local history that is not limited to architecture alone.

Żelechów on a Cycling Route

A 35 km cycling route is described that passes through Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Siestrzeń, Młochów, and Żelechów before returning to Grodzisk Mazowiecki. The route offers a different way to explore the area than focusing on its historic buildings: it centres on connecting several places along a longer route.

Bear in mind that the route signage and route information are inconsistent. Before setting out, check how the route is currently marked, and do not rely on a single route description for navigation. If your main interests are the church, the wayside shrine, or Chełmoński’s history, these themes can guide your choice of what to see in Żelechów independently of the cycling route.
