Nowogrodziec offers several distinct ways to explore its architectural and cultural history: the ruins of the Monastery of the Sisters of Saint Mary Magdalene, the observation tower, the town hall and the Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The town’s history is especially tangible in its surviving architectural features, specific dates and named builders. If you would like to plan your stay around your cultural interests, you can choose between architectural details, a dated building history and historic works of art.

Monastery Ruins and Cloister Courtyard

The ruins of the Monastery of the Sisters of Saint Mary Magdalene feature Baroque forms and elaborate stone window tracery, especially on the north facade. Inside, sections of various barrel and stone vaults, as well as several 17th-century memorial tomb slabs, have been preserved. The north facade draws attention to the window tracery; the remains of the vaults reveal the interior structure. The tomb slabs add another layer, connecting the site with the memory of the deceased. Restoration work also revitalized the inner main wall of the cloister courtyard.

Town Hall and Building History

The town hall’s history centers on a clearly documented phase of construction: the major rebuilding was overseen in 1795 by master mason Menzel of Bolesławiec and carpenter Anton Zugehoer. The date and the two trades provide a clear historical anchor for the building’s history. Together with the church, whose present-day late Baroque appearance resulted from a complete rebuild, the town’s architecture can also be viewed in terms of its different construction phases.

Observation Tower: Inspiration, Materials and Visiting

The observation tower was designed to resemble a medieval castle complex and built from local sandstone and bricks. The design inspiration and the materials answer different questions: the castle complex reflects the architectural model, while sandstone and bricks identify the materials used. The tower was once surrounded by a wooden restaurant structure. The tower can be visited by contacting the town office by phone in advance.

Church of Saints Peter and Paul and Dated Works of Art

The Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul acquired its present-day late Baroque appearance through a complete rebuild and was furnished between 1788 and 1793. Inside are a 1586 Renaissance epitaph to Matternus Olbricht and a plaque from 1542 bearing the monogram “MR” and the inscription “VDMIE”. The epitaph depicts the deceased with his family worshipping the Holy Cross. The dates place two older objects alongside the late Baroque construction and furnishing phase. The epitaph’s imagery and the plaque’s brief inscription offer different ways of engaging with these works of art.

Choose Your Historical Focus

If you are more interested in comparing architectural forms, consider the monastery’s carved windows and vaults alongside the tower’s castle-inspired design and building materials. To trace the timeline, compare the 1542 plaque and the 1586 epitaph with the church’s furnishings from 1788 to 1793 and the town hall’s 1795 date. This lets you explore Nowogrodziec either through its architectural features or through its dated historical evidence.
