A former market square that preserves elements of its original town layout offers a concrete glimpse into Pajęczno’s history. Several single-storey limestone houses, a Baroque Marian shrine, and 1000-lecia Park with the Matusowiec water basin show different sides of the town. Together with a linden tree several centuries old, they offer themes spanning architectural history, religious heritage, and nature. These distinctions can help you assess Pajęczno as a travel destination based on your interests.
The Market Square and the Town’s History
Several single-storey limestone houses built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries remain on the former market square. Their material, number of storeys, and construction period give the square a distinctive architectural character. The historic market square also preserves elements of the original town layout. An additional street, which runs from the middle of the southern side of the square, changed this layout. Thus, both the preserved parts of the original plan and the square’s subsequent transformation are part of its history.
Marian Shrine and Parish Church
The Parish Church of Our Lady and Saint Leonard is an 18th-century Baroque Marian shrine. The carved altar contains an image of Our Lady of Grace. Numerous faithful pilgrims visited the image of Our Lady of Pajęczno, which was venerated as miraculous. This pilgrimage history offers another perspective on the church’s historical significance, alongside its construction period and furnishings.
The parish church was entered in the register of immovable monuments under registration number 249 on 30 August 1967. The church’s rectory also dates from the 18th century. When considering their history, you can distinguish the construction dates from the protected status: the church and rectory date back to the 18th century, while the church’s registration dates to 1967.
Park, Water Basin, and Old Linden Tree
1000-lecia Park in Pajęczno includes the “Matusowiec” water basin. A linden tree several centuries old also stands in Pajęczno; its trunk circumference is 7 m and its height is 8 m. The park’s water basin and the tree are distinct features of the town: one is part of the park, while the linden is notable for its age and dimensions.
On 8 July 2022, kayak trips took place on Lake Matusowiec in Pajęczno. If kayaking is important to your plans, check in advance whether trips are currently available. This keeps the dated event distinct from present-day planning, while the park and water basin offer their own reasons to visit even without this activity.
