Market Square, Rectory and Church
Several single-storey limestone houses have been preserved at Pajęczno’s former market square. They were built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Their materials and construction give this part of the town’s history a tangible form. The rectory of the church in Pajęczno, by contrast, dates from the 18th century. Two periods in the town’s history are therefore represented side by side: houses dating from around 1800 and a rectory from the preceding century.
A prominent example of sacred architecture is the parish church of Our Lady and Saint Leonard. It is a Baroque Marian shrine from the 18th century. The carved altar features an image of Our Lady of Grace. The church is listed in the register of immovable monuments under number 249; the entry is dated 30 August 1967. The construction period, Marian dedication and image motif reveal different aspects of the same place of worship: its era, religious orientation and a specifically named motif in the altar.
The parish church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle in Makowiska offers a different perspective on monument preservation. Its entry under registration number A/366, dated 1 December 2017, covers not only the church but also the churchyard enclosure and the church grounds within it. Here, the focus is on the interplay between the building, the churchyard boundary and the enclosed grounds.
Pajęczno’s natural history is also tangible: a linden tree that is several centuries old stands there. Its trunk circumference is 7 metres and its height is 8 metres. These measurements add a different timescale and a distinct connection to nature to the town’s architectural history.
Park, Lake and Paths
Park 1000-lecia is one of the characteristic features of the Gmina Pajęczno. The Matusowiec water basin is located within it; Lake Matusowiec is in Pajęczno. This adds a clearly identified park and water feature to the area’s religious and architectural heritage.
A specific water-based activity at Lake Matusowiec is recorded for 8 July 2022: kayak trips took place there that day. The forest paths are associated with a different, community activity: on 22 and 23 April 2024, two groups of students cleaned several kilometres of paths from Rekreacyjna Street to 1 Maja Street in Pajęczno. Kayaking on the lake and cleaning the paths show two different ways of engaging in outdoor activities.
Pajęczno in the Wider Landscape
Pajęczno lies on the northern edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The wider Pajęczański County lies in the southern part of Łódź Voivodeship, at the transition between the Lesser Poland Upland and the Greater Poland Lowland; its northern edge borders the Kraków-Częstochowa-Wieluń Jura. For geographical orientation, these are two different scales: the precise location of Pajęczno and the wider landscape setting of the county.
