Lgota brings together a clearly situated memorial site, a long local history and cycling routes within a distinctive valley landscape. For travellers seeking to combine cultural history and scenery in one destination, the village offers several points of interest. The monument commemorates an event from 1944; Brodawka and Moczurka give Lgota its geographical setting.
Remembrance and Local History
The obelisk in Lgota commemorates eight victims of the Nazi pacification of the hamlet of Podlas on 29 October 1944. The memorial to the victims was unveiled in 1984 and renovated in 2019. Remembrance is thus associated with a precisely identified place and date. Visitors interested in the local history of the Second World War will find a concrete connection to Podlas here. The obelisk also serves as a landmark for cyclists: two cycling routes pass it in Lgota.
Lgota is mentioned by its present name as early as 1380, when Jakób z Lgoty inherited the village. The Lgocki family offers another historical perspective: it owned Lgota continuously for about 300 years and for at least nine generations in the male line. The early mention of the name and the long history of family ownership illustrate different timescales: a precise year and continuity spanning generations. The village’s history therefore extends beyond the specific wartime commemoration and encompasses several eras.
Valley, Ridge and Cycling Routes
Lgota lies on the Brodawka River, in a valley bounded to the southwest by the Moczurka ridge. At 437 m, Moczurka marks the western end of the Draboża Plateau in the southwestern part of the Wieliczka Foothills. The river, valley edge and plateau provide clear geographical reference points: the Brodawka locates Lgota by the water, while Moczurka marks both the southwestern boundary of the valley and the western end of the plateau. These geographical relationships also help place the village within its landscape.
Cycling offers another way to explore Lgota. The orange cycling route is 12.8 km long and passes the monument to the victims of the pacification of the hamlet of Podlas. The yellow cycling route also passes the obelisk. In the case of the orange route, its 12.8 km length is an additional detail alongside its proximity to the monument; the yellow route is likewise defined by passing the obelisk. This connects the memorial site with both local history and the cycling routes.
Historical Events and Education
Events are also part of the village’s history. The “Krzemionka Cross” trail race was held in Lgota at least three times. At the third edition in June 2022, participants could choose between routes of 8 km with 300 m of elevation gain and 15 km with 620 m of elevation gain. The two options therefore differed in both distance and elevation gain.
The Tomice Municipality Harvest Festival was held in Lgota in 2017. It was part of the Festival of the Carp Valley’s long-standing annual events. The first “Monte Lgota” rally was held in 1979, and Lgota was on the route of that inaugural event. These dated events show the village’s varied connections with a municipal festival, a trail race and a rally.
The village’s history also includes a school founded in Lgota at the end of the 19th century, which is now a branch of the primary school in Witanowice. Its founding and present-day affiliation form a timeline in the local history of education.
