At Czchów’s market square, several layers of history can be read in its details: a medieval route and markets, arcaded houses, and a Romanesque lion. The nature trail offers a different focus, while the view from the tower takes in Lake Czchów. This gives you two distinct questions to consider when planning: would you mainly like to explore local history and sacred art, or should nature observation, with its own time requirements, take center stage?
Market Square: Route, Houses, and a Romanesque Lion
Streets branch off from the corners of the market square, and a church stands at its southeast corner. In the Middle Ages, the Hungarian route ran across the square, where fairs and other important events were held. Beneath the sculpture of Saint Florian is a Romanesque lion from Czchów’s first church. Six of the 20 arcaded houses originally on the square remain on its north side; they were rebuilt after the great fire of 1947. These details tell different parts of the square’s history: the route and markets point to its former function, the houses represent reconstruction after the fire, and the lion recalls its origins in the first church.
Sacred Architecture and Historical Paintings
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is considered the oldest and best-preserved monument of sacred architecture in the town. Its surviving Gothic wall paintings (frescoes) are among the oldest and most valuable examples of historical painting in Poland. Here, two different scales meet: the architectural assessment relates to Czchów, while the frescoes are considered in the context of Polish art history. Those interested in cultural themes can thus distinguish the church’s local significance from the wider importance of its wall paintings.
Nature Trail with Ten Stops
Czchów’s nature trail passes through areas of natural interest. Its ten stops draw attention to features of living and non-living nature, protected plant species, and human activity. The trail therefore connects specific nature-related themes with a broader view of the surroundings and human impact. The walk is estimated to take 90 to 120 minutes; you can set aside this amount of time in your day’s itinerary. Steps lead up the path to a small tower. From there, you can see the surrounding area and the Dunajec River gorge.
Please follow the rules on the trail: avoid making noise or leaving litter, do not pick plants or disturb animals, and stay on the marked route. Check locally before your visit for any changes to the route.
Castle Ruins and Views
The ruins of Czchów Castle are on Baszta Hill in the southern part of the town. From the observation point on the tower in Czchów, the view extends over Lake Czchów; in good weather, you can see the ruins of Melsztyn Castle. The two locations offer different points of reference for planning: Baszta locates the Czchów ruins, while the tower offers views over the lake and, in good weather, of Melsztyn. Visibility of Melsztyn remains dependent on the stated weather conditions.
