In Brzesko, the range of themes spans the town hall, church and regional museum, as well as architectural history, landscapes and pilgrim routes. The historic complex in Okocim and the traces at Bocheniec also offer their own points of interest. When planning, consider whether you would most like to focus on architecture and town history, archaeological history or religious sites.

Brzesko: Architectural History and Museum

Brzesko’s eclectic town hall stands in the market square. It was built in 1909–1910 and has a four-storey tower. The term “eclectic” refers to an architectural style; the height of the tower also gives the building a clearly recognisable feature. An older chapter of the town’s history is reflected in the Church of St James the Apostle: its historic section dates from the mid-15th century.

The Regional Museum in Brzesko displays two bourgeois interiors, landscapes, portraits and local-history memorabilia. The collection thus combines insights into bourgeois living spaces with portraits, landscape depictions and local mementos. The Jewish cemetery in Brzesko offers a different perspective on history; it was entered in the register of monuments in 1992. Together, these places offer different ways to explore the past: through buildings, museum objects and a historic monument.

Okocim: Brewing Heritage and Park

The urban and architectural complex of the Brzesko–Okocim Brewery, the buildings surrounding it and the adjacent palace-and-park complex of the Goetz-Okocimski family were built from 1845 onwards and expanded through the 1930s. The palace itself was constructed later, in 1898–1900, in the Neo-Baroque and Neo-Rococo styles. These dates therefore refer to different parts of the architectural heritage.

The palace complex and park in Okocim are considered an important monument. An English-style landscape park dating from 1900 surrounds the palace; native and exotic trees and shrubs grow in the park. Architecture enthusiasts can distinguish the palace’s building history from the development of the larger brewery and building complex. The park adds a distinct historic landscape-design element to this focus.

Bocheniec: Elevation, Hillfort and Observation Tower

At 394 metres above sea level, Bocheniec is the highest elevation in the Brzesko area. The eastern rampart remains of a hillfort belonging to the Vistulans, dating from the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries, survive there. They are about four metres high and 18 metres wide at the base. These recorded measurements make it possible to describe the shape of the surviving rampart section precisely, while retaining the approximate height.

The Church of St Anne, dating from 1596, is also located on Bocheniec. Another, more recent landmark is the observation tower: it opened in October 2023, is 25 metres high and has six storeys. If you plan to visit the tower, check current access arrangements in advance. This makes it possible to consider the archaeological traces, religious architecture and observation tower as distinct aspects of Bocheniec.

Hiking and Pilgrim Routes

The signposted Szlak wokół Brzeska hiking trail is one way to make hiking part of your stay. The Via Regia is different: it is a pilgrim route from Brzesko via Jasień Brzeski and Brzeźnica to Bochnia. The named intermediate places set out a clear sequence along the pilgrimage route and make it a distinct focus alongside the architectural and landscape themes.

An exploration route through the municipality of Brzesko leads, among other places, to three stops with very different names: the Romeo i Julia natural monument in Mokrzyska, the Pantheon of Saints in Szczepanów and the Pavimentum Copernicanum in Brzesko. In Szczepanów, Pope John Paul II elevated the parish church to the status of a minor basilica on 6 September 2003. A triptych from the late 15th century is also located in the southern side chapel of the old church building in Szczepanów. These historical details give pilgrims and visitors interested in cultural history specific themes to consider when choosing their journey.
