Wielkie Leźno and Małe Leźno lie in a picturesque setting between two lakes on the edge of the Brodnica Lake District. In Wielkie Leźno, the landscape, routes for hikers and gravel cyclists, and a village shaped by history come together. Depending on your interests, the focus can be on the lake, outdoor activities or the settlement’s traditional layout.

Lake and Landscape

Jezioro Wielkie Leźno is a moraine lake covering 92.4 hectares. Its maximum depth is 4.1 metres, and its average depth is 0.8 metres. The shores are generally shallow, and the slopes of the lake basin are gentle. These figures clearly distinguish the average depth from the deepest point; the shoreline and basin shape provide further details about the lake. Wielkie Leźno lies wholly or partly within Górznieńsko-Lidzbarski Landscape Park. The park lists Leźno Wielkie among the lakes considered particularly clean.

By the Water

Jezioro Wielkie Leźno is a fishing lake for pike; perch can also be fished for between its two islands. At the same time, the use of combustion engines on the lake is prohibited. Check this rule locally before taking part in a water activity, as regulations can change. These are different details to consider when planning: the fish species and the area between the islands provide specific information for fishing, while the prohibition concerns the type of propulsion.

Hiking Trail or Gravel Route?

Two named routes differ in their mode of travel and total length. The 68-kilometre “GLPK Gravel 2024” gravel route passes through Wielkie Leźno. The 44-kilometre blue Górzno–Bachotek hiking trail passes Małe Leźno and Wielkie Leźno lakes and continues to Zembrze. This makes it easy to narrow down your choice: the gravel route is longer, while the hiking trail is the shorter of the two and includes the lakes mentioned along its route. The routes also differ in the places they pass: one goes through Wielkie Leźno, while the other passes both Leźno lakes.

Historic Village

Wielkie Leźno is one of the villages with a well-preserved historic settlement layout and has a linear layout along a road. The historic layout describes the spatial arrangement of the village; the linear form draws attention to buildings along a road. Historic wooden houses include No. 12, dating from the second half of the 19th century, and No. 24, dating from the first quarter of the 20th century. The two houses therefore represent different periods and may be privately occupied. The village also features a brick roadside shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary, dating from the second quarter of the 20th century.
