When looking for a vacation rental in Ayculaca, it is also worth considering the wider municipality of Macusani. It is home to cultural, culinary, and natural points of interest: religious art, the tradition of Chicharrón de alpaca, and rock formations and lagoons. This connection to the municipality opens up several different themes, from sacred artworks to conservation and geology.

Art and cuisine in Macusani

The Templo de San Juan Bautista in Macusani houses easel paintings from the 18th century. The subjects depicted include the Virgen Inmaculada Concepción “La Milagrosa” and the Virgen del Carmen. The temple also has candleholder sculptures. The description thus brings religious painting and sculpture together, with the two Marian images providing a specific focus for its art.

A culinary specialty of Macusani is Chicharrón de alpaca. The dish is considered the most representative of Carabaya Province, and its authentic flavor is attributed to Macusani. Its preparation is regarded as a living tradition, passed down from generation to generation. Selected alpaca meat is cooked in its own fat until golden brown, tender, and juicy. Typical Altiplano ingredients are served alongside it: native potatoes, chuño, and corn, as well as rocoto or ají, ground in a batán. Both the cooking method and the specific side dishes are therefore part of the dish’s culinary profile.

Highlands, rock, and water

Nevado Allincapac is considered an Apu, or sacred guardian mountain, of Macusani and has been recognized as a priority area for biodiversity conservation. The recognition was granted under Regional Ordinance No. 017-2015-GRP-CRP, dated January 10, 2016. The mountain reaches an elevation of 5,767 meters. Its cultural significance, conservation status, and specific elevation are thus all noted.

A different landscape is offered by the rock formation known as the “Ciudad Gótica de Pacunasa,” at an altitude of 4,885 meters. Its stone forest consists of geological formations that resemble the towers of a Gothic city. The name therefore describes the rocks’ distinctive shape, not a built city. The Alpicota, Coñocota, and Taype lagoons are also part of the municipality’s landscape: they are fed, among other sources, by meltwater from Nevados Allin Qhapaq, Huayna Qhapaq, and Chichi Qhapaq.

The route to the Pacunasa rock formation

To reach the Pacunasa rock formation, the route starts at the interprovincial bus terminal in Macusani and continues 15 kilometers by taxi along a paved road to the Huaylluma farming community. From there, it is another 2.5 kilometers on foot along a hiking trail. The Huanca Huanca rock paintings are located on the way to the rock formation. The journey is thus described in two sections using different modes of transport. As road conditions and services may change, check the latest information before setting out.
