El Manchón is closely associated with watermelon farming. Nature and culture in the municipality of Nandaime to which it belongs offer additional perspectives on the area. It is worth distinguishing the local history of cultivation from the festivals, protected areas, and farms found at the municipal level.
Watermelons and the Pan-American Highway
A report dated March 3, 2025, notes that the Chévez siblings have been growing watermelons in El Manchón together with their now-deceased father for more than 30 years. A 2014 report placed El Manchón at kilometer 71 of the Pan-American Highway between Nandaime and Rivas. For that period, it described around 120 watermelon producers and about 20 roadside stalls selling various tropical fruits. These figures offer a snapshot of farming and roadside sales at the time.
One description places Hotel Plaza Manchón on the Pan-American Highway in the municipality of El Manchón and lists 30 rooms, a swimming pool, and a restaurant. Before booking, check that the hotel is currently operating and that the listed facilities are available.
