Granada brings together collections of regional archaeology and art with churches that offer different historical perspectives. There is also a recurring October tradition and guidance for getting to boat docks. If you’re looking for hotels in Granada, cultural history, an October evening or a planned boat trip can shape the focus of your stay.

Arriving and Taking a Boat Trip

If you arrive in Granada by public transport, you can take a taxi from Parque Central or a bus station to one of three boat docks: the dock at the Centro Turístico de Granada in the Los Chilamates area, the Yellow Cabin dock at the end of the tourist center, or Asese port. Choosing a dock is a separate step in planning a boat trip. Since taxi availability and operating conditions may change, it’s a good idea to check them before setting out.

Museums and Churches with Their Own Histories

The Centro Cultural Museo Convento San Francisco houses museums devoted to regional archaeology, Solentiname folk art and Granada’s traditions. Its themed galleries invite visitors to discover archaeology, painting and folklore. The transition between archaeological, artistic and tradition-focused themes gives the visit a range of cultural highlights.

Granada’s churches also offer their own historical perspectives. The origins of Iglesia de Guadalupe are dated to 1624–1629. The first Iglesia La Merced, made of wood and straw, dates to the 16th century. The distinction matters when placing them in time: the 16th-century date refers specifically to the first Iglesia La Merced.

Iglesia de Xalteva stands on Calle Real in western Granada, in the area where the Indigenous settlement of Xalteva was located before the conquest. It was built during the colonial period and used as a military fortress because of its location. It served religious functions and was used for surveillance. It was also a place of trade with the Spanish, intended to help build relationships with the Indigenous people of Xalteva. Its location and historical functions can be considered together without reducing Iglesia de Xalteva to a single role.

October Tradition and Vigorón

In Granada, El Atabal rings out with drums and coplas every Saturday evening in October. If you want to plan your trip around a particular Saturday, it’s a good idea to check the dates for that year in advance. Visitors can also try Vigorón in Granada. Alongside the museums and churches, a seasonal tradition and a local dish offer different interests to consider when planning a trip.

The Department of Granada in a Broader View

The Department of Granada consists of the municipalities of Granada, Nandaime, Diriá and Diriomo; Granada is the main town. The following natural and cultural features belong to this broader regional context. Mombacho Volcano reaches 1,345 meters above sea level; cloud forest and humid tropical forest grow on its summit. Apoyo Lagoon extends across the departments of Granada and Masaya.

In Nandaime, the Río Manares Nature Reserve includes the Mecatepe and Juan Tallo lagoon system, as well as the Ochomogo River, which forms the municipality’s natural boundary. The traditions maintained there also differ from the cultural themes of Granada city: during celebrations, the dance of the little devils gives the festivities a theatrical and symbolic dimension, with children and adults taking part. The Atabal, maintained in Nandaime during patron saint festivals, includes poems, verses and songs in honor of the Virgin of Santa Ana.
