Mrčevac can be explored through two distinct local landmarks: Kukoljina’s sandy beach and the Church of Saint Agatha in the village cemetery. If you are planning a stay, these two themes can help you decide what matters most to you: the beach and seasonal conditions on the one hand, and a specific site connected with the village’s history on the other.
Beach, Village Church, and Seasonal Planning in Mrčevac
Kukoljina is a natural sandy beach with both public and private areas. Facilities include a beach bar and beach equipment; the beach can be reached by car or boat. Facilities and access may vary by season. If you are counting on specific beach services during your stay, check in advance to see what is available.
Another local landmark is the Church of Saint Agatha. It stands in the village cemetery and is traditionally associated with the noble Verona family from Prčanj as their family chapel. Alongside the beach, Mrčevac therefore also offers a specific connection to local church history.
There is also a seasonal landing and mooring facility at Mrčevac-Kukoljina, managed to meet the needs of Tivat Airport. As the facility is seasonal, check locally whether it is operating and confirm current schedules before making plans. This makes it a point to consider when planning, rather than something to assume is available year-round.
Nature and Culture in the Wider Tivat Destination
Beyond Mrčevac, the wider Tivat destination offers its own natural and cultural attractions. The Solila coastal wetland covers about 150 hectares and lies across Krtole Bay from Tivat’s city center. Since 2013, it has been listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and designated an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. Solila is a candidate Emerald site, not a site that has already been designated.
Tivat City Park also has a special protection status: it has been a nature reserve since 1968 and was declared a natural monument in 2015. Visitors can walk in the shade of mature trees, some of them exotic; a few are up to 130 years old and 25 meters tall. Nature experiences in Tivat thus range from a coastal wetland to a park with old trees.
Porto Montenegro offers several distinct ways to explore maritime culture. The Maritime Heritage Collection is a museum about Tivat’s maritime traditions and the Adriatic’s nautical past. The submarine museum includes the P-821 Hero submarine, considered a former flagship of the Yugoslav Navy. The “Jadran,” in turn, is considered a symbol of Tivat and its maritime tradition; the city and the ship are closely connected.
The museum and gallery spaces in the medieval Buća complex house the “Ethnographic Heritage of Tivat” collection, with exhibitions on art, ethnology, archaeology, and documentary subjects. Buća Luković dates back to the 14th century and is considered Tivat’s most monumental and best-preserved historic summer residence of its kind. Its fortified, 15-meter-high tower dates back to 1548 and is now used as an art gallery.
Activities and Events in Tivat
Those interested in activities on the water can go kayaking in the calm waters of Tivat Bay. The “Neptun-Mimoza” diving club in Tivat offers diving courses, organized dives, and rental of complete diving equipment; the club was founded in 1993. There are bike lanes on the streets of Tivat. Porto Montenegro offers sports and cultural activities, as well as numerous events for owners, crew members, visitors, and locals.
Seasonal events may also be a factor in planning a trip. The PURGATORY festival takes place in Tivat in summer, from mid-June to the end of August; most performances are held on the summer stage at Buća Summer House. Dates and venues may change in future editions, so check the details for the relevant edition. The Tivat Bowling Olympics is a traditional summer event, usually held in July or August. The game is played according to old folk rules, and participants from other Montenegrin cities and from abroad also take part.
Another beach in the wider Tivat destination is Kalardovo, a natural sandy beach in the municipality of Tivat that is especially popular with families with children. This information relates to Tivat and does not describe Kukoljina Beach in Mrčevac.
