Discover Tivat through a range of themes: protected nature, maritime history, historic architecture and activities on the water. When looking for a hotel in Tivat, you can start by considering what you would like to focus on during your stay. Nature and culture offer different points of interest; a visit for a festival also depends on the particular edition.

City Park and Solila: two sides of Tivat’s nature

City Park has been a nature reserve since 1968 and was declared a natural monument in 2015. Visitors can stroll in the shade of mature trees, some of them exotic. Some trees are up to 130 years old and 25 metres tall. The park offers a tangible way to experience Tivat’s protected nature: a walk beneath old trees.

The Solila nature reserve is a coastal wetland of about 150 hectares in Krtole Bay, across from central Tivat. Since 2013, it has been listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and designated an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). Solila is also a candidate for Emerald Network status under the Bern Convention. Benches are placed along the walking and cycling paths. Birds can be observed from two viewing towers and a lookout point on the road to Krtoli. The city park and wetland offer different experiences: trees and walks in one, coastal scenery and birdwatching in the other.

Maritime heritage and historic architecture

The Maritime Heritage Collection in Porto Montenegro is a museum about Tivat’s maritime traditions and the Adriatic’s nautical past. Also in Porto Montenegro is the Submarine Museum, featuring the P-821 Hero submarine, once regarded as a flagship of the Yugoslav Navy. The Jadran is considered a symbol of Tivat and its maritime tradition; the city and the ship are closely connected.

In the medieval Buća complex, the “Ethnographic Heritage of Tivat” collection features exhibitions on art, ethnology, archaeology and documentary subjects. Buća Luković is considered the most monumental and best-preserved historic summer house of its kind in Tivat and dates from the 14th century. The fortified tower of Buća Luković is 15 metres high, dates from 1548 and is now used as an art gallery. The two dates refer to different structures—the summer house and the tower—and lead from the history of the complex to a specific building now used as a gallery.

Porto Montenegro offers sporting and cultural activities, as well as numerous events for property owners, crew members, visitors and local residents. This complements the maritime museum themes with an events programme aimed at a range of groups.

Water, coast and activities

Kayaking is offered as a leisure activity in the calm waters of Tivat Bay. The “Neptun-Mimoza” diving club offers diving courses, organised dives and the rental of complete diving equipment in Tivat; the club was founded in 1993. Tivat’s streets are equipped with cycle paths.

Kalardovo is a natural sandy beach in the municipality of Tivat and is considered particularly attractive for families with children. Another coastal option in the bay is Stradioti, also known as St. Mark. This natural island is one of the bay’s major attractions and can only be reached by sea. A guided tour is recommended for exploring its hidden sandy beaches.

Seasonal events and choosing a hotel

The PURGATORY festival takes place in summer, from mid-June to the end of August; most performances are held on the summer stage at the Buća summer house. Dates and venues may change in future editions, so check the information for the specific edition before travelling. The Tivat Bowling Olympics is also a traditional summer event, usually held in July or August. It is played according to old folk rules, and participants from other cities in Montenegro and from abroad also compete.

If you are travelling to Tivat for PURGATORY, plan your trip around the dates of the specific edition; if you are more interested in Solila, the city park or the collections, you can plan your stay around those themes. This connects your choice of destination with your interests without turning the different offerings into a fixed itinerary.
