The hotel town of Sveti Stefan is built on a sandbar. On the island, cobbled streets, courtyards and hand-restored stone houses shape the scene. The coast and history provide a common thread for choosing between a focus on beaches and an interest in culture.

Beaches and Coastal Spots

The beaches of Sveti Stefan are sandy and feature pink and reddish stones. East Beach and West Beach lie on opposite sides of the access point to Sveti Stefan; their positions provide a reference point for finding your bearings along the coast. Nearby, Crvena Glavica has seven smaller beaches. Miločer Beach, also called King's Beach, is located in front of Hotel Miločer and is surrounded by a park with exotic trees. The coastal spots therefore differ in their layout, the number of smaller beaches and the landscape around Miločer Beach.

History of the Town

The settlement originated on a rock near the coast. Later, when it became a hotel, it was connected to the mainland. In 1442, Sveti Stefan was considered a military fortification. The town was once the center of the independent principality of Paštrovska. The Paštrovski tribal court, Bakanada, met in Sveti Stefan for 400 years, until 1929. Sveti Stefan also served the Paštrovići as a center of trade and transport. During the Republic of Venice and in trade with Venice, the town had strategic and commercial importance. Taken together, its military, political, judicial and economic roles stand side by side.

Churches and Cultural History

At the entrance to Sveti Stefan, the small Church of the Transfiguration preserves traces of fresco painting. A larger church on Sveti Stefan was built in 1885 and dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky in 1939. The religious architectural history thus offers different points of interest: surviving traces of frescoes, as well as a precisely dated building and its later dedication. The churches add a distinct cultural focus to the political and economic history.

Walks and Other Interests

Nearby, a walking route runs from Pržno through Miločer Park to Sveti Stefan. The route connects Pržno, the park and the town, complementing the individual coastal spots with a walking trail. Deep & Blue is a diving club associated with Sveti Stefan. For planning your trip, you can therefore choose between different interests: the coast, history, a walk or diving. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these interests you would like to focus on during your stay.

A Wider View of Montenegro

Those looking at Montenegro as a whole can contrast Sveti Stefan's coastal and historical themes with a distinct mountain and nature theme. Durmitor, a limestone massif, lies in northern Montenegro. Around fifty peaks in the national park rise above 2,000 meters; the glacial lakes are known locally as the “Eyes of the Mountains.” There are opportunities for hiking in Durmitor. The Tara Canyon, part of the Durmitor landscape, is Europe's deepest canyon. These features belong to Durmitor within the wider destination of Montenegro. This comparison can help you weigh coastal and mountain interests separately when planning your trip.
