Kaluđerac lies above the main road; Buljarica lies mostly below it, on the western side of the area. The nearby coastal area of Buljarica adds two distinct features to this setting: a long beach and a wetland inland. The wider Budva destination also offers cultural attractions and hiking opportunities. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus more on the local connection to Kaluđerac and Buljarica or on the broader cultural and natural attractions in Budva.
Coast and nature near Buljarica
Buljarica Beach is 2,250 metres long and is used for swimming. Near Petrovac, the shore is sandy; elsewhere, it is predominantly pebbly and rocky. This is a useful distinction when choosing a beach: if you are looking for sand, you can consider the section near Petrovac; elsewhere, pebbles and rocks define the shore. Inland from the beach, there is a campsite, restaurants and cafés. Facilities and conditions may change seasonally; check which options suit your travel dates before your trip.
Buljarica Field, the wetland inland from the beach, is considered a nature reserve and provides a habitat for rare plant and bird species. Its conservation history also has several milestones: Buljarica was designated an area of special natural characteristics in 1968, received Emerald Habitat status in 2006, and was designated an Important Bird Area in 2007. Before visiting, check with the relevant authority which conservation rules are currently in effect.
Budva: History and culture
In the wider Budva destination, the Old Town is a cultural highlight. Medieval walls, including a fortress, towers and gates, surround it. The Budva City Museum in the Old Town has archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions. The Citadel offers views of the city and houses a small museum, a library and a fish relief that symbolizes Budva.
Founded in 1987, the City Theatre Festival takes place during the summer months, turning squares and courtyards in the Old Town into stages. If you would like to coordinate your stay with the festival, check the dates for your travel period.
Another cultural highlight is in Petrovac: the Roman mosaics are floor decorations in a Roman building that probably dates from the 3rd or 4th century AD. The Spomen Dom Crvena komuna in Petrovac houses an art gallery, a library and a revolution museum. The Podmaine Monastery complex includes a functioning church dedicated to Saint Petka.
Hiking in the wider Budva destination
The Budva Riviera has almost 150 kilometres of hiking trails within the municipality. They pass through the hinterland and connect coastal villages.
