Discover Edinet through a variety of places: a large public park, historic buildings, an archaeological hall and a Jewish cemetery with memorials. This gives you several options when planning your visit: landscapes, architectural history, archaeology and remembrance.

Lakes and an island in Grădina Publică

Grădina Publică “Vasile Alecsandri” covers 44.5 hectares. Its notable features include a cascade of three lakes crossed by bridges with wrought-iron decoration. At the centre of one lake lies the “Island of Stories”. If you are also interested in landscaped grounds during your stay, you will find several distinct features here within a large park: the series of lakes, the bridges and the island. Check the condition of the bridges locally before your visit.

Architectural history in Edinet

Several buildings can be placed in chronological order by their dates. The “Sf. Vasile” Church was built of stone in 1870 on the estate of Petru and Sofia Cozițîn. It is dedicated to Saint Basil the Great and bears his name as its patron saint. Construction of the school of the former Edineț Theological Seminary began in 1873 and was completed on 11 March 1877. The former manor house of Sofia Cozițîn dates from 1885. Together, these dates span the years from 1870 to 1885. This lets you consider the historic sites not only by type, but also by date. The dates take you from the church building to the former seminary building and then to the manor house, but do not imply a fixed visiting order.

Archaeology at Muzeul Ținutului Edineț

The buildings of Muzeul Ținutului Edineț were constructed by Druț Leibman Șmil in 1922–1924. An archaeology hall at the museum opened to the public in 2021. Its exhibits include archaeological objects, a depiction of a tumulus and a cave scene showing prehistoric people. There is also a model of an archaeological site where children can dig. If you are interested in archaeology, this offers a different way to explore local history than viewing the church and seminary buildings. If the hall is a key reason for your trip, check visiting arrangements in advance.

Memorial sites and city walks

The Jewish cemetery in Edineț is divided into an old and a new section. Two mass graves of Holocaust victims are located on its right-hand side. The cemetery is one of the sights included in various themed city walks. If you would like to include a walk in your plans, check in advance whether a guided tour is available at the time of your visit. The memorials offer a different kind of cultural visit from the park, museum or historic buildings; plan to visit this site with due respect.

Getting there and event date

Edinet lies on the Chișinău–Cernăuți highway and is 8 km from Brătuşeni railway station. These details provide different reference points for planning your journey. Check which connection best suits your trip before deciding on accommodation. The district festival “Covorul dorului la Edineț” takes place annually on 15 December; the programme may vary. If you are travelling for the festival, confirm the dates in advance.
