In Edineț District, you can choose nature and cultural sites according to different interests: limestone landscapes, protected areas and monuments sit alongside a January festival and the documented history of Zăbriceni teas. The contrasts between the Brînzeni caves, the elongated “La Castel” area and the Fetești Amphitheatre are striking. First consider whether you want to focus on landforms, hiking and nature observation, or on architecture and traditions.

Nature: caves, rocks and river valleys

The Brînzeni caves are a natural monument of geological or paleontological type in Edineț District. The “La Castel” landscape reserve offers a different scale: the protected area lies near Gordinești, by the Racovăț valley, and extends as a strip about 200 metres wide and five kilometres long. Its elongated shape differs from a single distinctive rock formation.

The Fetești Amphitheatre is about 100 metres deep. Its landscape includes high, bare rocks, caves and grottoes, the Draghiște River and numerous springs. The combination of these elements gives this natural site a profile different from the narrow strip at “La Castel”: here, the depth and variety of the described landforms shape the impression.

The “Cuconeștii Vechi” cultural and nature reserve covers almost 100 hectares and combines historical, cultural and natural elements. For another perspective on the landscape, the “Stâncile Prutului” trail follows the Prut and passes through limestone formations. It offers opportunities for hiking and birdwatching. Conditions on the trail may vary; check them locally before setting out on a hike.

The steep Toltres slopes of the landscape reserve are also associated with Fetești. Activities to consider there include hiking, photography and observing rare flora. To choose according to your nature interests, compare the options: hiking and birdwatching are among the possibilities on the “Stâncile Prutului” trail; at the Toltres slopes, photography and rare flora are also in focus. The amphitheatre, in turn, is characterized by its depth and the combination of rocks, caves, river and springs.

Architecture, history and traditions

The Cantacuzino manor house and park in Poiana are a state-protected national monument of architecture, art and history. The wooden church in Hincăuți is also a state-protected national monument, in this case of architecture. Both sites offer a concrete connection to the built heritage, but with different emphases: the manor house description includes the park and several monument categories, while the church is notable for its wooden construction.

The “Nașterea Domnului” Monastery lies near the village of Zăbriceni and was founded on 4 August 1999. The “Aprindeți luminile” Caroling Festival takes place in January, up to Orthodox Christmas according to the Old Calendar. It serves to preserve Christmas traditions and carols. The exact dates may vary, so check the dates for the relevant year before travelling.

The “Biocămara” teas from Zăbriceni also have a documented history: they have been certified as ECO products since 2013; in 2016 they received the protected geographical indication “Ceai de Zăbriceni”. The two years mark different designations.

Planning your trip around your interests

If you mainly want to experience the landscape, the sites described differ in their features and activities: “La Castel” is characterized by its approximate dimensions and location by the Racovăț valley, while the Fetești Amphitheatre is defined by its depth, rocks, caves, river and springs. Activities on the Prut trail include hiking and birdwatching; the Toltres slopes combine hiking with photography and observing rare flora. For a cultural focus, there are the protected buildings, the monastery with its founding date, and the festival’s January tradition. This lets you tailor your choices to your interests rather than treating all nature and cultural sites as interchangeable stops.
