Victoria de Durango combines a long urban history with museums that showcase different aspects of the region, from archaeology and folk culture to Francisco Villa and mining. The city also offers historic architecture, a pedestrian promenade, and places to stroll. You can shape your stay around what you’re looking for, whether that’s exhibitions, urban history, or time outdoors.

Urban History and Historic Architecture

Villa Durango was founded on July 8, 1563. Durango was also a stop on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a trade route used since pre-Hispanic times and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the state of Durango, the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro received this status in 2010. This history stretches from the city’s founding to a route whose use began long before.

The historic center preserves almost 1,000 buildings constructed in past centuries. These buildings provide a visible setting for the city’s history, while museums complement it with a range of thematic perspectives. If you’re planning a cultural trip, you can enjoy historic architecture and exhibitions as distinct but complementary interests.

Museums: From Francisco Villa to Archaeology

The Museo Francisco Villa is dedicated to the life, legacy, and revolutionary context of Francisco Villa. It is housed in a former estate belonging to mining entrepreneur Juan José Zambrano. The building preserves a Baroque facade and murals depicting the history of Mexico and Durango. Here, the historic building and the story of an important figure come together.

The Museo de Arqueología Ganot-Peschard offers a different focus. Its seven permanent exhibitions cover Etapa Lítica, Loma San Gabriel, Cultura Chalchihuita, Cultura Guadiana, Cultura Aztatlán, Arte Rupestre, and El Método Arqueológico. The objects on display include columns, funerary urns, skulls, vessels, arrowheads, spindle whorls, chest ornaments, and other jewelry from the region’s pre-Hispanic peoples. The exhibitions connect individual artifacts with several archaeological themes and cultural contexts.

The Museo de Historia y Arte Contemporáneo Palacio de los Gurza also offers a range of perspectives, with galleries for temporary exhibitions and a permanent numismatics gallery. At the Museo de Culturas Populares, guided tours promote knowledge of the folk culture, identity, and ways of life of ethnic groups in Durango. Together with the archaeological museum and the Museo Francisco Villa, these venues offer different perspectives on history, art, and culture.

The Casa de la Cultura de Durango offers regular and summer art workshops for young people, children, and adults. The program is aimed at several age groups, with the summer workshops providing a distinct seasonal focus.

Promenade, Green Spaces, and Special Outings

Paseo Constitución is a pedestrian promenade in the historic center. Along the corridor, you’ll find terraces, cafés, restaurants, ice cream shops, and craft stores; temples and events are also part of its character. Its family-friendly atmosphere adds an opportunity to spend time in the city’s public spaces to the cultural experience.

For a stroll in a green setting, visit Lago de la China in Parque Guadiana. The lake is considered a family-friendly spot where you can walk, take photos of the fountain, and enjoy the green spaces. The Museo Bebeleche offers a different option for children, young people, and families: at this interactive museum, you can explore topics in science, technology, art, and culture through play.

The Túnel de Minería takes visitors underground beneath the historic center. At 280 meters long and ten meters deep, it displays murals, machinery, tools, and minerals donated by mining companies in the region. This makes it a very different experience from visiting the city’s museum collections. For another view of the historic center, take the Teleférico de Durango, which connects Cerro del Calvario with Cerro de los Remedios and offers views of the center.
