In Pueblo Nuevo, natural attractions range from forests and rock formations to waterfalls and viewpoints. There are also trails for different ways of exploring, as well as local handicrafts and historic buildings. Those looking to combine nature and culture during their stay will find several specific themes to choose from here.

Forests, Rocks, and Waterfalls

Parque Natural Mexiquillo in Pueblo Nuevo combines forests, mountain scenery, rock formations, a waterfall, tunnels, and cabins. In the JardĂn de Piedras, large rock formations resemble natural sculptures; some are more than eight meters tall. The birdlife is another special feature: the Durango state tourism authority describes Pueblo Nuevo as one of the Mexican municipalities with the highest rates of bird endemism.

Cascadas de Mexiquillo brings together a pine forest, hiking trails, rock formations, and a waterfall in the Mexiquillo area. Cascada Mil Diez offers a specific elevation: this natural attraction in Ejido Mil Diez is 18 meters high and lies near El Salto. A suspension bridge in front of the waterfall combines views of the water with extra adventure and thrills. Cascada Mil Diez also has cabins and outdoor areas for walking, relaxing, taking photos, and enjoying nature activities. The availability of these amenities may vary.

Other natural sites each offer something different: Cascada El RincĂłn de ChavarrĂa Viejo is a place shaped by forest and water, ideal for hiking and nature photography. Cascada ChavarrĂa combines a waterfall and forest with opportunities for hiking.

Views and Active Exploration

Mirador El Espinazo del Diablo is located on the Durango–Mazatlán free highway, facing the canyons and peaks of the Sierra Madre Occidental. In the Mexiquillo area, Mirador Santa Teresa also offers views of the Sierra Madre Occidental and is a good spot for photography. The terrain and weather there can change quickly. Wear shoes with good traction and keep away from edges; check conditions again before your visit.

The old railway tunnels of Mexiquillo were built for an unfinished rail line and are now part of an adventure route. They can be explored on foot, by bicycle, or on guided tours; local conditions may vary. Parque La Pirámide in Chavarría Viejo offers a different range of activities: this nature and adventure park includes hiking trails, zip lines, a via ferrata, and climbing opportunities. The tunnel route thus offers several ways to explore, while La Pirámide brings together a range of specifically named activities.

Bosque Escondido leads through pine forests and canyons to a remote natural site. The route requires preparation and experience. Puentecillas offers a different landscape: the ecotourism center in the Sierra of Pueblo Nuevo includes a lake, cabins, viewpoints, hiking trails, and forested scenery. Access is via the El Salto–Pueblo Nuevo road to kilometer 16, followed by about five kilometers of unpaved road. As access conditions can change with road conditions, check them before setting out.

Handicrafts, Cuisine, and Historic Buildings

Traditional handicrafts and cuisine are also part of the local character. Furniture made from Manzanillo roots is among Pueblo Nuevo’s handicrafts. Pulque made from corn fermented in the sun is also part of Pueblo Nuevo’s traditional cuisine.

Buildings listed as historic monuments include the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe and the Templo parroquial La Pusísima Concepción (San Francisco de Asís). Together with local handicrafts, they give Pueblo Nuevo’s cultural side a concrete form. Travelers sorting through their interests can consider natural sites, active ways to explore, and this historic heritage as distinct highlights.
