El Sauzal combines surfing history and recreational activities at Playa San Miguel with birdwatching at Arroyo San Miguel. Culture and history are also part of the area’s character: Casa-Museo Abelardo L. Rodríguez, Hacienda El Sauzal, and a regional wine tasting each offer something distinctive. You can choose how to experience El Sauzal based on the interests you want to shape your stay.

Surfing history and recreation at Playa San Miguel

Playa San Miguel is a rocky beach where people surf and camp. It is located on the Tijuana–Ensenada highway in El Sauzal de Rodríguez. The beach is also considered the birthplace of surfing in Mexico because of its history: the Baja Surf Club met there and held Mexico’s first international surfing tournament in 1966. This is a historical reference, not a claim about a current or recurring event.

Families often have picnics and enjoy other recreational activities at Playa San Miguel and in the wooded areas along Arroyo San Miguel. The area is also used for cultural, sporting, educational, and tourist activities. Those interested in surfing history will therefore also find a place with a wide range of recreational uses.

Birdwatching at Arroyo San Miguel

Arroyo San Miguel is one of the best-preserved and least altered streams in the urban area of Ensenada. A total of 107 bird species have been recorded in the Arroyo and Playa San Miguel area, which birdwatchers visit frequently. Nature observation is therefore a distinct focus alongside beach activities.

The combination of the stream area, wooded areas, and Playa brings different interests together in the same part of the region: on one side are birdwatching and nature, and on the other are surfing, camping, and picnics. This can help you decide which side of El Sauzal matters most for your trip, without treating the activities as interchangeable.

Casa-Museo and the residence’s history

Casa-Museo Abelardo L. RodrĂguez aims to showcase regional history, promote cultural activities, and host exhibitions. Its collection includes objects and photographs of Abelardo L. RodrĂguez and other figures of the Mexican Revolution. Abelardo L. RodrĂguez and his family lived in the residence that now houses the museum from 1930 to 1967, except during the years when he held government posts in the presidential cabinet.

This history can be distinguished from that of Hacienda El Sauzal. In 1930, architect Frank Walter Stevenson (1892–1968) designed the hacienda as a retreat for General de División Abelardo L. Rodríguez. It is recognized as a cultural heritage site of Baja California and is located in the El Sauzal de Rodríguez delegation in the Ensenada municipality.

Architecture and regional wines

Hacienda El Sauzal is distinguished by its red-tile roofs, stucco walls, and round arches. Other features include balconies with balustrades, latticework in the Arab and Moorish styles, Corinthian columns, and Ionic elements. Towers with chimneys and French windows complete the architecture. Those interested in architectural history will encounter a different facet of the area here than at the beach or in the stream area.

The D’Varios Tasting Room offers another way to experience El Sauzal: guests can sample a menu and more than 80 wines from the region. When looking for a hotel in El Sauzal, you can first consider whether surfing and recreational activities, nature observation, history and architecture, or wine will play a bigger part in your stay.
