Discover Baja California through a variety of experiences: explore wineries and regional cuisine, arid landscapes, protected areas, and activities by the sea. As you plan your trip, consider which aspect interests you most and use it to guide your search for hotels in Baja California.

Wine and Regional Specialties

Wine takes center stage in Valle de Guadalupe. There are more than 100 wineries there; the current number may change. They include LA Cetto, Mexico’s largest winery, as well as smaller boutique producers. Visitors can taste wine on site. The region’s diversity is reflected not only in its landscapes but also in the different sizes and specializations of its wine producers.

Other culinary traditions can be found elsewhere. In Playas de Rosarito, the traditional dish Langosta estilo Puerto Nuevo is served with beans, rice, and freshly made flour tortillas. It is known for its buttery, lemony flavor. Tecate, meanwhile, is associated with artisan bread baked in stone ovens, available from local bakeries such as Mejor Pan de Tecate. In San Quintín, you can visit oyster farms and try fresh oysters. These examples offer different highlights: a dish served with classic sides, stone-oven bread, and fresh oysters.

Arid Landscapes and Protected Areas

Valle de los Cirios protected area covers more than 2.5 million hectares. Visitors can see different types of arid-zone vegetation there, set against the contrasting backdrops of the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California. Attractions include the Cataviñá Oasis and the Centro de Visitantes-Museografía Berrendo. Nature lovers can go birdwatching and observe gray whales in winter; sport fishing is also possible. The bighorn sheep is also associated with the area.

The view from the Sierra de Juárez is different: Parque Nacional Constitución de 1857 is considered a unique ecosystem in this mountain range. Its Laguna Hanson is a unique freshwater body in Baja California and the park’s main attraction. Another striking natural area is Valle de los Gigantes, south of San Felipe on the way to Puertecitos, on the grounds of Rancho Punta Estrella. The cactus forest there includes cardón cacti that grow up to 17 meters tall.

The seascapes offer their own opportunities for wildlife viewing. In the Zona marina Bahía de los Ángeles, canales de Ballenas y de Salsipuedes marine protected area, visitors can observe whale sharks, fin whales, dolphins, and turtles, as well as landscapes featuring the islands of the Gulf. The Islas del Pacífico de la Península de Baja California protected area is home to a great variety of birds and marine mammals, as well as coastal and marine landscapes. The different protected areas therefore combine wildlife viewing with strikingly varied scenery.

Activities and Practical Information

For activities by the sea, Playas de Rosarito offers a particular highlight: it is known as the birthplace of surfing in Baja California. Waves are available year-round, with suitable spots for beginners and experienced surfers; conditions depend on the weather. Hiking and kayaking are possible at La Bufadora, south of Ensenada. San Quintín is on the Pacific coast and is described as a sport-fishing destination; you can also visit oyster farms there and try fresh oysters.

Parque Nacional Sierra de San Pedro Mártir is accessible only by private vehicle or through tour operators offering trips from Tijuana, Mexicali, and Ensenada. As access and tour conditions may change, check the options before your visit. Attractions in the Sierra include the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional, from where Picacho del Diablo can be seen.

For hiking routes, there are also the Senderos Oficiales de Baja California, a standardized trail system that brings together history, nature, and adventure. Under SESO BC, each trail has signage and facilities that meet international standards; the experiences are considered accessible, safe, and sustainable. As conditions on individual trails may change, check the information for the trail you plan to choose.

Whether wineries, regional specialties, arid landscapes, or activities by the sea are your main interest, Baja California offers several distinct themes to guide your trip planning. Use your preferred focus as a guide when looking for suitable hotels for your stay.
