Bahía Asunción is located within the Reserva de la Biósfera El Vizcaíno protected area and along a long sandy beach. The coastal landscape and wildlife viewing define the area, while patron saint celebrations and various activities offer additional reasons to visit. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between nature excursions, activities by the sea, and festival dates.

Beach, Tides and Island Nature

A blowhole forms natural pools that can be used for swimming at high tide. You can also explore the spray and tide pools there. Swimming, boogie boarding, bodysurfing, and surfing are also possible activities; sea conditions vary. For those interested in coastal landscapes and wildlife, the surrounding area offers another highlight: Seabird populations are recovering on nearby Isla Asunción after feral cats were eradicated.

From Bahía Asunción, trips by panga or kayak to the islands are described for the period from January to May, to observe sea lions, nesting seabirds, seals, dolphins, and gray whales. Wildlife sightings and transport availability may vary. Landing on the nearby islands requires a permit; regular access is limited to employees of the fishing cooperatives. Check the current access rules before planning an island visit.

Land and Water Activities

The hills and valleys of Bahía Asunción have a mountain-bike singletrack route. Other possible activities include kitesurfing, kayaking, horseback riding, fossil hunting, sailing, hiking, and off-roading. This lets you consider different interests without treating them as a fixed itinerary; the availability of individual providers may change.

Sport fishing is also possible, including surf fishing, fishing from the rocks, and spearfishing. Diving offers the chance to experience marine life and observe the harvesting of wild abalone. A 2025 travel article also describes boat trips during which visitors can watch fishermen at work and hauling lobster traps. Check availability in advance for these locally organized activities.

Getting There and Festival Calendar

From Vizcaíno, turn off the Transpeninsular Highway after the Pemex gas station. From there, it is about 60 kilometers to the turnoff for Bahía Asunción; the drive then continues for about another half hour on a well-paved road. The road to Bahía Asunción is paved throughout. Signage and road conditions may change.

The patron saint celebrations traditionally take place every year in mid-August and last five days. The festival program includes, among other things, beach activities, beach volleyball, live music, dances, food stalls, rodeo, horse and motorcycle races, jaripeo, religious events, and a fair. In 2023, the celebrations took place from August 11 to 15; check the exact dates and program before your trip. This gives you two distinct time windows for special interests: the island and wildlife-viewing trips described here take place from January to May, while the traditional fiestas are held in mid-August.
