Gamprin-Bendern offers several distinct starting points for a journey of discovery: the historic Bendern Church Hill, the Historic High Trail of Liechtenstein, and nature and leisure activities around Grossabünt. This lets you plan your visit around specific interests, such as regional history, hiking, biodiversity or mountain biking.
Hiking: Route and Views
The 16 km main route of the Historic High Trail of Liechtenstein runs from Bendern to Hinterschellenberg on the Austrian border and back via Gamprin. Circular Route 2 offers a different focus: it passes the earliest prehistoric settlements and provides views of the surrounding mountains and the Rhine Valley. The two routes therefore offer different points of interest to guide your choice: the High Trail focuses on distance and route, while Circular Route 2 highlights the settlement sites and landscape views.
Grossabünt: Nature, Trails and Leisure
The Grossabünt natural area includes species-rich habitats that are carefully maintained and designed to blend with nature. Information panels focus on the region’s biodiversity. Two trails explore different themes: the Stone Trail at Grossabünt presents part of the region’s geological history, while the Wood Trail leads past 50 different native woody plants, including maple and European beech. The themes thus range from geological connections to the diversity of native trees and shrubs.
The Grossabünt leisure facility in Gamprin covers 4.5 hectares. Its natural swimming lake has a swimming area of more than 3,500 m². These figures refer to different areas: the facility as a whole and the lake’s swimming area. The SDG Trail is another feature of the leisure facility: plaques along its main access path present all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Visitors interested in biodiversity, geological history or sustainability can each find a distinct way to explore the area.
Bendern Church Hill: History in Several Chapters
On historic Bendern Church Hill, the subjects of the County of Schellenberg swore allegiance to the Prince of Liechtenstein for the first time on 16 March 1699. The present-day complex of the church, rectory and former rectory stable on the hill dates back to the 15th or 16th century. Bendern Rectory was built in 1532 and served the Premonstratensians as a monastery for centuries. Together, these landmarks give the history of the church hill both a political and a religious dimension.
A later chapter is the Marian Lourdes Grotto, created between 1896 and 1898 in a hollow in the rock on the church hill. During the church year, it is a destination or stop on several processions. The grotto adds another religious dimension to the earlier architectural and monastic history; its dates also help trace the sequence of the places and events described.
Mountain Biking
Bike-Fun-Kratzera is a bike course with obstacles made from natural materials. Mountain bikers can test and develop their skills there; different difficulty levels offer a range of challenges. Helmets must be worn on the course. If you plan to visit, check the applicable safety requirements on site.
