Ruggeller Riet is a distinctive natural area in the far north of Liechtenstein. The peatland, covering around 90 hectares, is also a nature reserve. At the end of 2024, the Bern Convention of the Council of Europe included the Riet in the cross-border Emerald Network. The area is ideal for walking, cycling and inline skating; it is also connected to the cycling networks of Austria and Switzerland.
The natural landscape extends beyond this one wetland. Liechtenstein is home to more than 1,500 plant species, and the Alpine region is a protected area for plants. This brings together a specific natural area in the north and a nationwide perspective on biodiversity and conservation.
Castle Hill and Walser Culture
The hill on which Gutenberg Castle stands has been inhabited for thousands of years, as archaeological finds attest. Guided tours of the accessible castle interior and grounds last 75 minutes. Check visiting dates and reservation arrangements in advance.
The Walser Museum presents the rural and domestic life of people from the Valais who settled in Triesenberg in the 13th century. Guided tours of the 400-year-old Walser House in Hag give visitors an insight into 19th-century domestic culture. Check the arrangements for guided tours in advance.
These themes reveal different historical time spans: from the hill inhabited for thousands of years, through the history of the Walser people from the 13th century, to the 19th-century domestic culture presented in the Walser House.
Industrial History and Art
At the Liechtenstein NationalMuseum, IndustrieWelt Liechtenstein, newly created in 2019, presents the country’s leading industrial companies and their history. The museum offers private guided tours of its exhibitions in German and English; other languages are available on request. Check current availability before your visit.
The Liechtenstein Museum of Fine Arts in the heart of Vaduz offers a different focus. It opened in 2000 as a museum of modern and contemporary art. Its collection is also the state art collection of the Principality, with a particular focus on three-dimensional works such as sculptures, installations and objects. When choosing a museum visit, you can therefore distinguish between industrial history and an art collection with a spatial focus.
Experience Liechtenstein Along a Route
The Liechtenstein Trail passes through all the municipalities and connects nature, culture and history. Its cycling route is 85 kilometres long. In scale, it differs from Ruggeller Riet: the Riet is a specific area with named activities, while the trail brings the country’s municipalities together along one route. If you are planning to cycle the route, check the latest route details.
