Discover Prizren through its buildings and the Lumbardh River: the fortress sits on a hill, the city is home to mosques and churches that date from different periods, and Lumbardhi Cinema now serves as an arts and community centre. This cultural thread leads from a settlement with more than 3,500 years of human presence to a diverse programme of films, concerts, performances, exhibitions and lectures.

Fortress and Archaeology

Prizren Fortress is a hilltop settlement shaped by more than 3,500 years of human presence. It is considered an attractive tourist destination and one of Kosovo’s most important cultural heritage sites. The fortress’s Archaeological Museum displays artefacts from several periods: its permanent exhibition spans the Eneolithic and Iron Age, the Illyrian-Dardanian, Roman, Byzantine and medieval periods, and the Ottoman era. It thus encompasses a long sequence of historical periods in one place.

From the historic centre, you can reach the fortress by following marked paths uphill from Shadervan Square or the Marash neighbourhood, in about 10 to 15 minutes. These starting points and the approximate duration provide clear guidance for the walk; the route climbs uphill.

Mosques, Churches and Historical Periods

Several religious buildings can be dated through their history. St. Spas Church is in Prizren’s historic centre, on the southeast side of Nen-Kalaja, and was built between 1333 and 1335. The Suzi Çelebi Mosque dates from 1523; it is considered the second-oldest Islamic site in Prizren and the first to feature wholly Islamic architecture. The Sinan Pasha Mosque was built in 1615. Inside, floral and geometric motifs can be seen, painted in three phases.

The Mehmed Pasha Mosque (Bajrakli) is also among the historically and culturally valuable sites in the historic city-centre area. St. Parascheva Church is the only heritage site in Prizren under UNESCO protection. Together, the buildings represent different religious and architectural traditions; the dates given also make their distinct historical periods tangible.

Squares, Bridges and Historic Uses

The Shatervan Fountain stands in the middle of Shatervani Square in the historic zone and is considered one of the city’s landmarks. Prizren’s Stone Bridge directly connects Shadërvan Square with the old Saraçhane Street. These two connections provide clear points of reference for finding your way between the square and the street.

The history of the League of Prizren is also tied to a specific place: its assembly took place on 10 June 1878 in the League’s building complex. The complex was converted into the Museum of the League of Prizren in 1978. Another example of a later cultural use is the Old Town Hall. It was fully restored in 2010/2011 and converted into the first Regional Centre for Cultural Heritage in the Balkans.

The Lumbardh, Marash and Cultural Life

The Lumbardh River flows through the city centre. In eastern Prizren, the urban complex of Marash lies on the river’s left bank, below the fortress. Marash is also rich in underground waterways and streams of the Lumbardh. Fishing has a tradition as a recreational sport in Prizren. The river, waterways and urban setting thus form a distinct theme alongside the buildings and cultural history.

Lumbardhi Cinema was founded in Prizren in 1952 and later converted into a cultural monument. Today it serves as an arts and community centre, with film screenings, concerts, performances, exhibitions and lectures. DokuFest also has a historical connection to the cinema: it began in 2002 with the screening of 20 films, mostly from Kosovo and neighbouring countries, at Prizren’s only cinema. These beginnings should be distinguished from Lumbardhi’s current functions.

In the Destination’s Surroundings

The Hydropower Plant–Museum of the Electric Economy is located at the third kilometre of the road from Prizren to Brezovica. In 1979, it was converted into the Kosovo Electricity Museum. This site of industrial heritage adds to the architectural and cultural history that can be seen in Prizren itself through its fortress, religious buildings and cultural institutions.
