A striking introduction to Kosovo is its mountain landscape: the Sharr Mountains and Bjeshkët e Nemuna, including the Rugova region, are described as tourist attractions in the country. Waterfalls and caves offer further natural attractions. When planning a trip, you can first decide whether landscapes, outdoor activities or cultural discoveries should be your main focus.

Mountains, protected areas and natural attractions

Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park was established to protect its preserved ecosystems, as well as its endemic and relict species. This makes conservation an important part of the natural character of this mountain region. The Sharr Mountains and Bjeshkët e Nemuna, including the Rugova region, are listed as attractions in Kosovo’s tourism strategy; they represent distinct named landscape areas, without implying that they form a single route.

The tourism strategy also lists the Mirusha Waterfalls and Gadime Caves among Kosovo’s popular attractions. Together with the mountain regions, they show the range of natural features to consider when planning a trip: high mountains, waterfalls and caves. Gjeravica is described as an attractive peak for climbing. Via ferrata routes are also mentioned as tourist activities in Kosovo’s natural areas.

Hiking and outdoor activities

The Via Dinarica is a long-distance hiking trail that stretches from Albania to Slovenia and includes northwestern Kosovo. Via Dinarica Kosovo – Stage 07 is suitable for a day hike or as a starting point for the Via Dinarica Kosovo Trail. Before setting out on this route, check the conditions and trail markings, as they may change. The two references to the Via Dinarica offer different kinds of guidance: one describes the transnational route, while the other identifies a specific option for a day hike.

In the municipality of Peja, the Rugova region is visited for walks and recreational and sporting activities. The local tourist offering also includes leisure cycling, both on the plains and in the mountain areas. These activities give you different ways to experience the region; they are not the same as a specific route or a fixed daily itinerary.

Peja: Gorge, Cycling and the Cultural Trail

The Rugova Gorge begins in the municipality of Peja, two kilometres from the city centre, and is twelve kilometres long. These measurements provide a concrete sense of the area, but do not indicate how long a journey or walk will take. The Rugova region is visited in the municipality for walks and recreational and sporting activities; leisure cycling in the plains and mountain areas is also available.

Another way to explore Peja is along the Cultural Trail. It leads to Haxhi Zeka Square, where the Ethnographic Museum is located. This allows you to consider cultural sightseeing and outdoor activities as different interests when planning your trip: the trail links a route to a named square and museum, while the information about the Rugova region and cycling describes ways to get active in nature.

Frescoes, museums and festivals

At the Church of the Holy Virgin of Ljevisa, early 14th-century frescoes represent what is known as the Palaiologan Renaissance style. According to the 2024–2030 tourism strategy, the National Museum is one of Kosovo’s most visited cultural attractions. The two offer different ways to discover the country’s culture: one focuses on the art history of a named religious building, while the other is a museum identified in the strategy as a major attraction.

Festivals also offer a range of cultural experiences. Dokufest is a short film festival in Prizren, traditionally held in Kosovo, that attracts visitors from across Europe. The international music festival Sunny Hill is traditionally held in Kosovo and takes place in Prishtina. Anibar is an international animation film festival in Peja and is also traditionally held in Kosovo. The three festivals differ in their themes and the locations named for each: short films in Prizren, music in Prishtina and animation in Peja. If you are planning to attend a festival, it is advisable to check the dates of each event.

Travel information and coffee tradition

The 2024–2030 tourism strategy describes Adem Jashari International Airport as Kosovo’s only operational airport. Since airport status can change over time, check it before travelling. Good transport connections to other parts of Kosovo and neighbouring countries are noted for the municipality of Prizren. A single transport detail does not replace planning your entire route.

Coffee tradition is also part of the cultural experience: it is rooted in Kosovar culture. Along with the museums, frescoes and festivals, this creates a picture of travel shaped by more than landscapes and outdoor activities. If you are looking for hotels in Kosovo, you can first choose your focus based on the themes of your trip—such as mountain landscapes and hiking, cultural sites or festivals—and then look for suitable accommodation.
