Magelang offers several starting points for planning a trip: city history, museums, local traditions and nature. To choose your priorities, you can weigh up the 503-meter-high Mount Tidar, art and history collections, and the city's events and food.

Nature and Mount Tidar

At Mount Tidar, visitors can explore the pine forest or hike up the hill. Kebun Raya Gunung Tidar carries out work in plant conservation, research, education, tourism and environmental services. Nature and education are therefore part of the experience alongside tourism. Grebeg Suro takes place annually in the area around Kebun Raya; the tradition includes a ritual at the summit of Mount Tidar.

Another green space is the 27.5-hectare Taman Kyai Langgeng. It is home to hundreds of rare plant collections and also serves as a destination for religious tourism. Visitors can enjoy a water park, fish therapy, a flying fox course, tandem bicycles and ATVs there. As individual facilities may change, it is advisable to check the current offerings before your visit.

Art, museums and city history

The Oei Hong Djien Museum is an art museum displaying 1,500 works of art. These include paintings, sculptures, installations and ceramic crafts. Visitors interested in different art forms will find a different focus here than in the city's historical collections.

The Panglima Besar Sudirman Museum was established on May 18, 1967. Among other things, it displays recreations of Sudirman's bedroom and living room, as well as photographs and paintings of General Sudirman. The Museum Taruna Abdul Jalil focuses on weapons and equipment used in military training. Tourists can use a guided tour service there; a souvenir shop is also available to visitors. Check in advance whether the guided tour service is available. The Bumiputera 1912 Museum covers the history and development of insurance in Indonesia and was built in the Javanese Central Javanese Joglo style. At the BPK RI Museum, visitors can learn about the duties and powers of the BPK, as well as its work.

A detail of the city's history can be found at Titik Nol Kilometer Kota Magelang: the marker consists of an old lantern monument bearing the inscription “Maart 1924 Electrificatie Magelang” and a post marked “MGL 0.” Historic buildings around the square include Klenteng Liong Hok Bio, the Grand Mosque, the water tower and GPIB Beth-El. The square is suitable for strolling and sheltering. Klenteng Liong Hok Bio was founded in 1864 and restored after the 2014 fire. It also hosts traditions of the Chinese-descended community, including Imlek celebrations with Barongsai performances.

Traditions and local food

Grebeg Gethuk is an annual festival celebrating the anniversary of Kota Magelang. The program includes a procession with Gethuk and produce gunungan from 17 kelurahan, the taking of the gunungan, the dance drama “Babad Mahardika” and other cultural performances. Grebeg Suro is also held annually. If you want one of these traditions to determine when you travel, check the dates for the relevant travel year.

Kupat Tahu is one of the typical local dishes of Kota Magelang. Gethuk Pojok Bu Endang has been around since the 1950s; its place of sale is at Pasar Rejowinangun. These two names give you a specific culinary connection to the city, without assuming a particular restaurant or opening hours.

More activities and Central Java

For water-based activity, Progo Rafting offers white-water trips along the Progo River. Fun games, flying fox and paintball are also available. As individual activities and conditions may change, you should check the current options in advance. Other cultural attractions to consider in Central Java, the wider travel destination, include Borobudur and Prambanan. Borobudur consists of ten levels: six square terraces and three circular platforms, ending in a main stupa at the summit. Prambanan lies on the border between the provinces of Yogyakarta and Central Java; the temple complex comprises 240 temples whose reliefs depict the Indonesian version of the Ramayana.
