Once a year, residents of Desa Pandansari celebrate Ratiban, a harvest thanksgiving tradition in the Telaga Ranjeng tourism area. The Ministry of Culture has recognized Ratiban as Indonesia’s intangible cultural heritage. In Brebes, an annual tradition is thus linked with a lake that also stands out for its location and natural features.
Tradition, batik, and a highland lake
Telaga Ranjeng is located in Desa Pandansari, Kecamatan Paguyangan, Kabupaten Brebes, at the foot of Gunung Slamet. The natural lake lies at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level and is home to many tame fish. Its high-altitude setting and connection with Ratiban give the name Telaga Ranjeng both cultural and scenic significance.
Salem batik is associated with the centers in Desa Bentar and Desa Bentarsari in Kecamatan Salem. Its motifs include kopi pecah, manggar, and ukel; its distinctive color scheme is black and white. Another batik tradition is Batik Brebesan, which began to develop around 1917. In Brebes, specific patterns and colors thus sit alongside a historical timeframe for the development of batik.
Reservoir and tea plantation
Waduk Malahayu is located in Kecamatan Banjarharjo, Kabupaten Brebes, near the border between Central Java and West Java. It was built during the Dutch colonial period and began operating in 1937. Activities around the reservoir include boating, fishing, and trekking. The history of the Waduk and the range of activities by the water offer two distinct perspectives on this place.
Agrowisata Kaligua is a PTPN IX tea plantation at the foot of Gunung Slamet, in Desa Pandansari, Kecamatan Paguyangan. Hikes to Puncak Sakub are offered there. Visitors can also visit Gua Jepang and the Tuk Bening spring. The combination of plantation, hiking destination, cave, and spring gives Kaligua several distinct points of interest, with no set order to follow.
Coastal spots and fishing locations
At Pantai Randusanga, you can take boat trips out to sea. The beach offers views of the Java Sea and opportunities to watch the sunrise and sunset. Pantai Randusanga Indah is about five kilometers north of the city of Brebes. Pulau Hantu Sigempol is in Dukuh Sigempol, Randusanga Kulon, not far from the city center; it has fishing spots and fishing equipment. Together, these destinations offer different experiences on the water: coastal views and boat trips, as well as fishing opportunities at Pulau Hantu Sigempol.
Waterfall and rocky riverbed
Curug Putri is located in Padanama, Mendala, Kecamatan Sirampog, Kabupaten Brebes. There, water plunges between high rocky cliffs and then flows over a boulder-strewn riverbed. The site is relatively remote and somewhat difficult to reach. Take its accessibility into account when planning your visit.
Brebes specialties
Telur Asin is a specialty from Brebes. To make it, duck eggs are salted and preserved. Sate Blengong is made from the meat of a cross between a male duck and a female Muscovy duck and is served with ketupat. The two specialties showcase different aspects of the local cuisine: Telur Asin centers on preserving duck eggs, while Sate Blengong features meat served with ketupat.
