Along the coast of Pantai Tanjung Tinggi, fine white sand, exceptionally clear seawater and enormous granite boulders meet. The beach is also known as Pantai Laskar Pelangi and was a filming location for the 2008 movie “Laskar Pelangi.” Coastal scenery, wildlife watching and cultural discoveries reveal Belitung's many different facets.

Granite Coastlines and Island Experiences

Pantai Tanjung Kelayang is also marked by white sand, clear turquoise-green water and large granite formations. Visitors can swim, snorkel and canoe here. From the beach, you can continue your trip to nearby small islands such as Pulau Lengkuas; check local boat services and conditions before setting out.

A lighthouse built in 1882 stands on Pulau Lengkuas and is still used as a navigational aid. The surrounding waters are home to tropical fish and coral reefs, and snorkeling is one of the popular activities there. The coastal scenery and underwater world complement each other, while the lighthouse provides a historic landmark on the island.

The Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark features another granite landscape: massive, pale granite boulders rise from crystal-clear water. A 650-meter-long path also runs through the Kuale Granite Mangrove Forest. The coast and mangrove forest thus offer contrasting landscapes.

Observe Nature and Explore on Foot

The Belitung tarsier (Cephalopachus bancanus saltator) is endemic to Belitung. The species lives in dry scrubland and secondary forests. Those interested in wildlife watching can visit Tebat Rasau, a nature tourism destination where visitors can observe wildlife in its natural habitat.

At Bukit Peramun, views of tropical rainforest and huge granite boulders combine with a summit panorama stretching all the way to the sea. Marked trekking trails lead through the area, which is also home to rare plants and distinctive rainbow lorises. The trekking trails offer a different way to experience the landscape than viewing it from the coast. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Nature and the sea also come together on Pulau Kepayang: visitors can snorkel and explore the mangrove forest. The island is also home to a sea turtle conservation station. Visitors can observe conservation work and experience the release of hatchlings into the sea; conditions for taking part may change.

Stories, Traditions and Local Cuisine

Literature and film meet at the Andrea Hirata Museum of Words. The museum's concept is based on a replica of Muhammadiyah Gantung Elementary School, and it is located near the original school, which served as a filming location. Another trace of the island's history can be found at Open Pit Kampit, a former open-pit tin mine dating from the Dutch colonial period. The UPT Museum Pemerintah Kabupaten Belitung in Tanjungpandan preserves local history, culture and artifacts relating to social life, Belitung's natural resources and its history of tin mining.

Religious and cultural sites include Vihara Yuddhayana in Damar. It has existed since 1747 and is considered several centuries old. During the Sawang people's Muang Jong, a miniature boat laden with offerings is set out to sea: the ritual expresses gratitude and is associated with a request for the fishermen's safety. At Desa Wisata Kreatif Terong, traditional dances and Gambus music are part of cultural tourism; individual performances may vary.

Belitung Culinary Adventure makes local cuisine a shared experience: participants sample dishes, learn how they are prepared and interact with local residents. In a traditional kitchen, they can prepare and taste local dishes themselves. Menus and booking details may change, so check the specific offering in advance.

Belitung in the Wider Island Region

The broader destination of Bangka-Belitung lies east of Sumatra and comprises the main islands of Pulau Bangka and Pulau Belitung, as well as numerous smaller islands. The Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark also extends across land and sea; its described area includes 241 surrounding islands with coral reefs, mangrove forests and seagrass beds. This regional perspective places Belitung within a larger island world without equating its individual landscapes.

If you are looking for accommodation on Belitung, you can start planning your trip around the experiences that interest you most: the coast and snorkeling, wildlife watching, trekking, culture or local cuisine. The discoveries mentioned here offer different starting points; they do not dictate a set order.
