The island province of Kepulauan Bangka Belitung lies east of Sumatra and includes the main islands of Pulau Bangka and Pulau Belitung, as well as numerous smaller islands. White beaches and large granite rocks define the region. Along the different coasts, this landscape reveals itself in a variety of ways.

Beaches, Granite and Islands

At Pantai Tanjung Kelayang, white sand and clear blue-green water meet large granite rocks. Pantai Parai Tenggiri also offers fine white sand, clear greenish water and granite rocks. Pantai Matras can be described in precise measurements: the beach is three kilometers long and 20 to 30 meters wide. Pantai Pasir Padi has a wide coastline with coral and rocks, as well as a two-kilometer stretch of white sand. This lets you choose between beaches that differ not only in sand and water, but also in their coastal features.

At Pantai Matras, you can swim and play on the beach or in the fresh water that flows down to it. The sea at Pantai Tanjung Pesona is calm enough for swimming; there is also an area for water sports. Banana boat rides are available at Pantai Tikus Emas.

Pantai Tanjung Kelayang is a starting point for island-hopping trips to Pulau Lengkuas, Pulau Batu Berlayar and Pulau Pasir. Visitors can rent boats for these trips from local operators. Pulau Lengkuas is home to a historic lighthouse from the colonial era, and you can snorkel in the surrounding waters. Pantai Pasir Padi offers another way to combine a coastline with an island: Pulau Punai can be reached on foot from there at low tide. Check local tide times before walking to the island.

Nature Between the Sea, Mangroves and Rainforest

The Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark extends across land and sea and includes 241 surrounding islands with coral reefs, mangrove forests and seagrass meadows. At Kuale Granite Mangrove Forest, a 650-meter-long trail runs through the mangrove forest. Bukit Peramun offers a different focus: it has designated trekking trails, views of tropical rainforest and large granite rocks, and a view from the summit all the way to the sea. The area is home to rare plants and the distinctive rainbow langurs.

Kampung Reklamasi Air Jangkang is a nature and tourism area on former mining land. It is used for the breeding and rehabilitation of protected animals. Pulau Cina also combines nature conservation with special importance for wildlife: the island is a significant sea turtle nesting site within Belitung’s regional marine protected area. A center for their protection, intended to combine tourism and education, is in preparation. Check current visitor access in advance.

Religious Sites and Traditions

Religious sites include Bukit Fathin San on the slopes of Bukit Betung. The Mahayana temple is a place of worship for Buddhist and Chinese devotees and has 350 steps. Pagoda Nusantara on Bukit Naga Kumala is also a religious destination and place of worship for Buddhist and Chinese devotees. Peh-Chun ritual ceremonies are held at Pantai Pasir Padi.

In Belitung, Muang Jong is a Sawang ritual in which a miniature boat loaded with offerings is set out to sea. Taking part depends on the local schedule. Perang Ketupat is an annual tradition in Tempilang, Bangka Barat, and takes place before Ramadan. The exact dates change with the Ramadan calendar; check the event dates if you want to plan your trip around it.

Tin Mining History, Woven Textiles and Regional Cuisine

The history of tin mining can be explored both in a museum and at a former mining site. The Museum Timah Indonesia in Pangkalpinang was founded in 1958 and presents the history of tin mining and its development in Bangka Belitung. The Nam Salu Open Pit near Gunung Kik Karak is one of Southeast Asia’s oldest tin mines. Visitors can see the remains of historic tin-processing technologies and some of the island’s oldest exposed rocks.

Kain Cual also tells the story of regional craftsmanship. This woven textile, typical of Bangka, has been known since the 18th century, features distinctive patterns and gold threads, and was formerly worn by nobles in Mentok. Lempah Kuning is a yellow dish with a fresh, sour taste, usually made with fish as its main ingredient. Kemplang is a fish cracker that is baked or fried and often served as a snack or taken home as a souvenir.
