The basalt rock corridor and Vadlán-lik are among Nagygörbő’s scenic attractions. A recommended seven-kilometre hike leads from the park of Tolnay Kúria to a local attraction; local history and the Tollfosztó complement the focus on nature with cultural themes. When planning, it is worth looking beyond the distance alone: on steep sections and varied terrain, the ground and current trail conditions are also relevant.
Basalt Rock Corridor and Hike
Nagygörbő’s tourist attractions include Sziklafolyosó and Vadlán-lik. Vadlán-lik cave lies at the end of the corridor between basalt rocks. The rocks in Nagygörbő’s coat of arms represent the basalt rock corridor within the municipality. This means the corridor is not only named as a tourist attraction, but is also represented in the municipal symbol.
A recommended hike leads from the park of Tolnay Kúria over seven kilometres to a local attraction. White trail markers with a yellow stripe in the middle mark the route. Pay attention to the terrain on the route to Vadlán-lik: the first two-thirds are steep, with significant elevation changes over short stretches; the final third passes through wooded, rocky terrain.
The surface also changes along the way: two-thirds of the route follows a paved road, then continues along a gravel road. The route’s two divisions into thirds answer different planning questions: one describes the gradient and terrain, the other the surface. So take both the elevation profile and the change from asphalt to gravel into account as you prepare. Benches and tables are available near the entrance to Vadlán-lik; check before your visit whether these facilities are still there.
Local History and Tradition
Nagygörbő’s local assets include the Nagygörbői Helytörténeti Múzeum, “Nagygörbő Múltunk képekben” and “Nagygörbő Falutörténet.” A video about the exhibition “Nagygörbő Múltunk nélkül nincs jövő” is dated 26 June 2021. “Múltunk képekben” and “Falutörténet” offer two perspectives on local history: the past in pictures and the history of the village.
The Tollfosztó represents a different kind of cultural connection from the museum and the history titles: young and old come together each year to revive and preserve this cheerful tradition. This shows that local history is reflected not only in named themes, but also in a custom maintained collectively.
Zala in a Broader Context
In the wider travel destination of Zala, visitors can see a 390 cm overshot waterwheel mechanism in operation at the Kotsy-vízimalom in Zalaszántó. With an overshot wheel, water is directed onto the wheel from above; the term thus describes how it is powered. The Zalai Borvidék was also established in Zala, on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. The wine region comprises two wine districts and 38 settlements. These represent two different scales for understanding the region: a specific piece of machinery at the mill and a wine region with a wider regional reach.
